Actress Shailene Woodley, 33, is preparing to play legendary rock icon Janis Joplin in the upcoming biopic Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can, and on October 5, she admitted singing for the film is "scary."
"Singing is very scary," she told People in a new interview. "It's very vulnerable."
Luckily, Woodley is no stranger to singing. While many fans know her for her dramatic acting chops in films like Divergent, Big Little Lies, The Fault in Our Stars, The Descendants, and Secret Life of the American Teenager, she proved she can slay the stage when she made her Broadway debut in November 2024.

The actress starred alongside Barbie Ferreira and Zachary Quinto in the Second Stage Theater production of Cult of Love at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theater. You can also catch a little bit of her singing abilities in a 2014 interview with The Hollywood Reporter where she sings "A Whole New World," but we imagine her voice will sound a little different when it comes to playing a rock star.
"[I get to] work alongside Linda Perry, who's our music producer on the set and is a legend. She's really pushed me to figure out to find my own voice," Woodley told Jimmy Fallon in 2024. "I was like, 'I can't sing like Janis!' and she put me in a lot of uncomfortable situations where she's like, 'All right, show up here' [to] a massive empty warehouse with a full band. She's like, 'Have fun! Sing some songs!'"
Though Woodley was announced for the role in late 2024, she told Fallon at that time that she had already been "working on it for seven years," and was "really excited" to be playing the legend.
"She's such a groovy chick, man," she said. "She really brought the light to this planet, in a really singular way and it's been so much fun to dive into her story."

"I have a feeling Janis would be smiling ear to ear, zipping down the PCH in her psychedelic Porsche knowing her story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and people that held so much significance to her,” she said in a statement about the film when it was announced, according to ABC News.
