The Cubs may or may not want the off-day today, but I certainly don’t. Having to wait until tomorrow night to see if the Cubs can bounce back is going to be a painfully long wait …
When the Cubs beat the Padres on Thursday, a number of us discussed the Cubs’ starting situation for the Saturday NLDS opener as being something like “probably Javier Assad or Colin Rea.” At the time, it was less a matter of rejecting Matthew Boyd as an option because of projected performance, and more a matter of Boyd being on short rest, and two of his worst starts this year having been against the Brewers. I just didn’t think the Cubs would rush Boyd, specifically, to get him into the series as the Game One starter. I was mistaken, but I want to note that, when Boyd was announced, it’s not like I freaked out. I could understand why the Cubs went that way, especially with other righties available to back him up if he got into trouble early. I probably would’ve gone with Assad or Rea, personally, but I’m not going to hindsight the heck out of this thing and suggest I expected THAT kind of disaster. That said, it wasn’t up to me to decide. It was up to the Cubs. And they got it wronnnnnnng, so they have to wear that. “We picked Matt Boyd to pitch,” Craig Counsell said when pressed about the decision, per ESPN. “I don’t know what to say. He pitched, it didn’t go well. We’ve got to make decisions. We went with Matt. We’re very comfortable — I was very comfortable — putting Matt Boyd on the mound today. The whole organization was comfortable putting Matt Boyd on the mound today.” So, again: very, very fair to criticize the Cubs for completely biffing that decision. Also fair to criticize Boyd for a really poor performance. Maybe his defense didn’t help him, and maybe the Brewers were exceptionally on him, but still – go back and watch, and you’ll see some truly awful belt-high pitches throughout his brief appearance. You just can’t have that in the playoffs. Maybe Boyd has fully worn down and his command just isn’t going to be there the rest of the way. It’d be easy to understand, given his huge jump in workload, and it doesn’t take away from all that he’s accomplished this year. But it certainly must be kept in mind when it is next time to figure out who starts Games Four or Five, if the Cubs make it that far."(The Brewers) had a good approach. "Could be devastating." – Brewers manager Pat Murphy on Jackson Chourio's hamstring injury."Physically, I feel good … It was a little bit more precautionary to come out of the game." – Jackson Chourio pic.twitter.com/JAQfqUOeXn
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) October 4, 2025 Chourio missed most of August with a strain of that same right hamstring, so I’m sure that’s what drives a lot of the caution, especially in a game like that. We’ll just see if he’s out there tomorrow, as the Brewers immediately sent him for an MRI, apparently, though the schedule is such that the Brewers could now give him three days of rest and have him miss just one game. If I had to guess, and if Kyle Tucker was doing anything at all, it was probably just that he was annoyed at how the game was going:Kyle Tucker bat flipped a walk and William Contreras said something to him pic.twitter.com/HCDvuzAUi7
— Jomboy Media (@JomboyMedia) October 4, 2025 As discussed yesterday, although you wouldn’t script it this way, the fact is, the Cubs’ most critical relievers did not pitch yesterday. So they now are getting at least three straight days off, with then another off-day locked in for Tuesday. The Cubs can be VERY aggressive in their deployment tomorrow.
