For as fun as it was to see Michael Busch lead the game off with a home run, it was a COMPLETE and IMMEDIATE disaster thereafter. Matthew Boyd had nothing, and got rocked on three straight doubles. Then he walked a guy. Then Nico Hoerner let a dribbler get under his glove. When Nico Hoerner is making the kind of error you don’t normally see on a middle school team, you know things are not good. It only got worse.
By the time the first inning was over, the Brewers had bounced Boyd, had batted around, had put six runs on the board, and had put the game – it turned out – very much away.
If you want to stay optimistic, you can tell yourself a variety of things: (1) however ugly the loss, it counts as only one game in a series of up to five; (2) Freddy Peralta against Matthew Boyd on short rest was gonna be tough no matter how it wound up looking; and (3) maybe the Cubs used up a lot of their crap moments in a single game!
I joke a little with that third one, and the second one doesn’t provide me much comfort given that Peralta is coming again in this series. But the first one, I do think that’s legit. “How” you lose a game in the playoffs really doesn’t matter. There are no style points. It’s a 0-1 hole in the series whether you lose by one or by six.
Ultimately, the Cubs just have to flush this one as best they can (after, perhaps, figuring out how the Brewers’ bats were so geared up for everything the first two Cubs pitchers were throwing (that’s not an accusation (this time), mind you, as Boyd was really throwing some meatballs up there – but I do wonder if the Brewers also figured out a tip)).
Kudos to Aaron Civale and Ben Brown for eating up the bulk of the innings and letting everyone else get an unexpected rest day. Heck, Civale probably deserves the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game for his work today, assuming you don’t give it to a Brewer. Which I will not.
