When Mathison and Budig reunited on her podcast, it was like no time had passed at all. They spent years working together on All My Children.

However, time had passed, and life has been challenging for Mathison the past few years. The actor choked up more than once, making Budig tear up as he got real about the things he’s had to face.

Mathison admitted that in the past few years, the soap star has battled kidney cancer, lost his mother to brain cancer, a close friend went through a very serious drug battle, he lost a job he loved, and that was just the beginning of the heartache he endured.

“My wife and I, Vanessa and I, basically began a very painful separation which led to a divorce, we’re in the process of. Then my dog died. Then my kids left for college and my house burned down and I lost everything that I have ever owned and every evidence of my life and my kids’ lives,” Mathison expressed.

The tears were flowing as Mathison spoke about all the loss, while also admitting he feels grateful for those challenges because they have helped shape him and make him stronger.

“I almost feel like I am not afraid of anything,” the actor stated. That includes all the backlash he’s been receiving over playing the despicable Drew Cain on General Hospital.

Amid all the challenges he’s faced, playing such a villain on the ABC soap has actually helped Mathison. General Hospital fans may not enjoy this version of Drew, but Mathison is having a good time.

“It's been kind of fun. It initially was a challenge. I didn’t fully understand it; I think the audience also, the viewers. It just sort of came shockingly quickly, this transformation of Drew, certain things that happened. But it came also through a phase of my life where there was a lot of big life challenges happening, and there was some anger there, and you know there’s a lot of other emotions and other things that we deal with when we’re faced with a lot of difficulties,” Mathison stated.

While he didn’t give away any spoilers during his Soapy interview, as Parade reported, Mathison warned General Hospital fans that what Drew does after Monica’s (Leslie Charleson) passing is next-level awful.

Mathison was amazing to listen to on the podcast as he got emotional about life with his friend Budig. Rikaart was great too, giving props to Mathison for how he’s dealt with all the challenges life has thrown his way lately.
