LET’S GO, the Series You Want, Aggressive Usage, Counsell, Tucker, and Other Cubs Bullets

For weeks now, this was the series I was hoping we’d get. Things were lining up such that, if the Cubs took the top Wild Card spot and the Brewers held on to the top overall spot, they would meet each other in the NLDS if the Cubs could win the Wild Card Series. So I wanted it. I wanted it, obviously, because it meant the Cubs were moving on, but more than that, I wanted it specifically because THESE Cubs can beat THESE Brewers.

The latter should be the favorite, with the better record and home-field advantage, so all the weight of expectation should be on the Brewers. Who’ve been sitting. Waiting. Thinking. Ruminating. There’s a whole lot more pressure on that side. The Cubs can just go out and play.

The Brewers won the division. The Cubs can win the Division Series.

Double up your hype and LET’S GOOOOOOOOO:

    — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) October 4, 2025 Today’s starters have pretty opposite storylines this season when it comes to the opponent: Freddy Peralta has kinda dominated the Cubs, Matthew Boyd has had two of his worst starts against the Brewers. All we can do is hope that the Cubs see Peralta well after so much exposure this year (four starts), and Boyd can give the Cubs three or four strong innings before Craig Counsell goes to the bullpen. Yes, the ‘pen was used heavily this past week, but they all got an off-day yesterday and have another one tomorrow, so there’s no reason to let up.

    — Elise Menaker (@EliseMenaker) October 3, 2025 A reminder that, in the postseason, getting even three clean innings from your starting pitcher is better than getting, say, six innings of three-run ball. This is not April or May. To that end, I appreciated this reminder that dominant starters who give you length are not ABSOLUTELY REQUIRED to succeed in the postseason:

    Just to show, it can be done without dominant starters, here are the game-by-game innings for Dodgers starting pitchers in the 2024 postseason:3 IP5.1 IP5 IP1.1 IP5 IP7 IP1 IP4 IP4.1 IP3 IP1 IP5.1 IP6.1 IP5 IP2 IP1.1 IPAverage: 3.75 IP per start.

    — Rob Erickson (@Cubsin7Blog) October 4, 2025 Kyle Tucker is getting close to being about to play in the field (Tribune), even though he’s expected to DH again today. That’s pretty notable, because if and when Tucker can play in the outfield, the Cubs would have a LITTLE more flexibility to play around with Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ’s usage, as well as Moises Ballesteros. I’m not saying you’d definitely start Ballesteros over Happ, for example, but you would at least have the option. © Troy Taormina-Imagn Images Challenge accepted:

The series is going to be decided by the players, not managers, in Craig Counsell's return, Christian Yelich says."It's not like Couns has exotic blitz packages."

    — Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) October 3, 2025 I chuckled:

Greg in Ravenswood loves him some Dansby Swanson."The Padres had 5 runs all series. It seemed like Dansby saved more than that by himself in the field. And I got to say, I'm jealous of Mallory Swanson, because I just want to give Dansby a big ol' kiss after that performance." pic.twitter.com/2YTDLBkBQi

    — Paul Sullivan (@PWSullivan) October 4, 2025 The Rangers are the first club to hire a new manager this cycle, reportedly giving Skip Schumaker a four-year deal. Meanwhile, the Mets are cleaning house after this season’s collapse, despite keeping manager Carlos Mendoza:

Also out are third base coach Mike Sarbaugh and the retiring catching instructor Glenn Sherlock. The Mets are keeping manager Carlos Mendoza, but the consequences of missing the postseason are changes atop the hitting and pitching program, as @AnthonyDiComo and @martinonyc said.
