What you hope is that the fact that Boyd threw relatively few pitches on Tuesday means his arm will be plenty fresh for Saturday, especially against a Brewers team that has fared quite well against him this season.
In Game One of the Wild Card Series, Craig Counsell pulled Boyd after 4.1 innings and 58 pitches, turning those middle innings over to an impressive Daniel Palencia. It’s possible that’s the way things go again on Saturday, but I think it’s just as plausible that we see Boyd pulled even earlier, and more of the bulk given to a Colin Rea or a Michael Soroka or an Aaron Civale (TBD on whether Javier Assad now gets put on the NLDS roster, and, if so, whether he pitches out of the bullpen).
The hope from here is that Boyd can give you everything he’s got at least one time through the order, and maybe a bit more after that. The Cubs are obviously working on a whole lot less rest than the Brewers, but the built-in extra off-days in the series could help Counsell be just as aggressive in this series as he was in a Wild Card Series that had three games back-to-back-to-back.
