Actress María Gabriela de Faría, who starred as the villainous Angela Spica, better known as The Engineer in 2025's Superman, is opening up about her difficult childhood.
In the September 30 episode of actor Michael Rosenbaum's podcast, Inside of You, De Faría shared that her parents were teenagers when they had her. She said that she has "a lot of childhood trauma," which led her to become an actor. The 32-year-old also clarified that she loves her parents and has taken the steps to heal.
"We've all gone to therapy. We have healed. But it was a s--t show growing up. It was a complete s--t show. They were teenagers. We were really poor," said De Faría in the podcast interview. "Everything that could happen to us, happened to us. And they weren't prepared to be parents. I'm amazed that I'm alive, that my brother is alive, that we have good brains, good minds."
She also said that through healing and therapy, she, her parents, and her brother are "getting to the point" where their dynamic is "kind of a normal and happy and loving family."

During the Inside of You podcast episode, de Faría, who started her career as a child star in Venezuela, shared that she took her parents to the Hollywood premiere of Superman, directed by James Gunn, in July 2025. According to de Faría, her mother and father had an emotional response to her having a role in such a blockbuster film.
"My parents were there ... They were crying all night. All night. Crying. Crying. Crying. Crying," said de Faría to Rosenbaum while recording the podcast episode.
De Faría mentioned that her parents accompanied her to the Superman premiere while speaking to Extra TV on the July 7 red carpet event for the film.
"And the fact that my family is here, I cannot even explain. They don't speak a word of English, so they're super lost but they're super proud," said the 33-year-old to the publication.
While speaking to Extra TV, De Faría expressed gratitude to her husband, Venezuelan actor Christian McGaffney. She said that she views McGaffney as a superhero, much like Superman, aka Clark Kent (David Corenswet).
"My superhero in my life is my husband. We've been together for 12 years. And I love that man," said De Faría.
