Eric Dane is finally opening up about his Emmys absence.
The actor, who is currently battling ALS, explained to the Washington Post on Thursday, Oct. 2, that shortly before the awards show, he lost his balance in his kitchen and fell.
“ALS is a nasty disease. … So I was in the hospital during the Emmys getting stitches put in my head,” Dane said. “I missed an opportunity I was really looking forward to. It would have been great to see Jesse [Williams] and get reunited with some of my peers, and to be able to present in front of my colleagues I thought would have been a special moment. So I was really upset about it, but you know, there was nothing I could do about it.”
Dane was supposed to take part in a Grey’s Anatomy 20-year anniversary segment and was scheduled to present an award alongside his former Grey’s co-star Jesse Williams.

The Euphoria actor first shared his ALS diagnosis in April, revealing more details during an interview with Good Morning America in June. There, he told Diane Sawyer that he first became concerned after experiencing weakness in his right hand.
“I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” he said. “I thought maybe I had been texting too much and my hand was fatigued.”
After the weakness worsened, Dane visited hand specialists who sent him to a neurologist. Nine months later, he received the crushing diagnosis of ALS.
“I will never forget those three letters,” Dane continued. “It’s on me the second I wake up. It’s not a dream.”

Recently, Dane said he plans to "fight until the last breath" for a cure for the disease.
“I wanna ring every bell,” he said. “I have two daughters at home. I wanna see them graduate college, get married, maybe have grandkids. I wanna be there for all that."
Dane shares daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, with wife Rebecca Gayheart.
The actor recently traveled to Washington D.C. with the nonprofit I AM ALS to advocate for further research and assistance in neurodegenerative diseases. There, he spoke with lawmakers about the importance of The Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act.
Passed in 2021, the legislation provides five years of research funding and allows early access to ALS treatments. The legislation is set to expire in 2026.
“It so often takes all this time for these people to be diagnosed. Well, then it precludes them from being part of these clinical trials. That’s why Act for ALS is so great because it broadens the access for everybody," Dane told California congressman Eric Swalwell.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells controlling voluntary muscle movement. The disease leads to muscle weakness, eventually causing paralysis, while the mind remains aware. At the moment, there is no cure.
