People is taking a trip down memory lane as the magazine gears up to name a new Sexiest Man Alive this year. The official Instagram for People shared Swayze’s cover with a heartfelt message about the late actor.

When Did Patrick Swayze Die?
The talented actor’s life was cut short following a battle with pancreatic cancer at age 57. Swayze began having symptoms in late 2007 and was diagnosed with the disease soon after.
During his fight, Swayze spoke openly and honestly about his battle to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer. In fact, Dr. Joe Hines, director of the UCLA Agi Hirshberg Center for Pancreatic Disease in Los Angeles, told Today that Swayze was “very impactful” in helping shine a light on the terminal disease.
Swayze fought until the very end, keeping his wit and charm about him. The actor lost his battle in 2009. 10 years later, the documentary I Am Patrick Swayze was released, focusing on his life and shedding more light on his battle with pancreatic cancer.
Lisa Niemi, Swayze’s wife of 34 years, became an advocate for pancreatic patients following his death. She also wrote a book, Worth Fighting For: Love, Loss, and Moving Forward, about supporting him amid his fight, as well as life after losing him.
