Hollywood Icon Dyan Cannon, 88, Explains Her ‘Friends With Benefits’ Comments

Dyan Cannon isn't always clued in with modern slang.

The Hollywood icon, 88, who rose to superstardom in the 1969 sex comedy Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice alongside Natalie Wood, Robert Culp, and Elliott Gould, solidified her stardom in the '70s with hits like Heaven Can Wait and Such Good Friends. She even became a bestselling author in 2011 after publishing her memoir, Dear Cary: My Life with Cary Grant, about her marriage to the legendary actor. But if there's one thing Cannon certainly has, it's a great sense of humor. The star opened up to Fox News Digital about a recent interview in which she spoke about having many "friends with benefits."

"The Hollywood Beauty Awards gave me an award called 'Timeless Beauty,' right? And this really cool gal from People Magazine, she was a darling girl, said, 'Can we interview you?' And I said, 'Yes.' And she said, 'You have a lot of friends in Hollywood.' And I said, 'I do. I have some nice friends.' And she said, 'Friends with benefits?' I said, 'Of course. And they benefit me in more than one way.' And she said, 'Well, how is that? And I said, 'Well, they just keep coming, they just keep benefiting me in more than one way."

Cannon laughed, adding, "I did not know what that meant!"

The next morning, Cannon was flooded with responses from friends and acquaintances.

"I got some congratulatory notes. I got notes from some of my Christian friends saying, 'Oh, well, Dyan, that's not very nice.' I said, 'Guys, come on. Come on. I thought friends with benefits meant friends who benefit your life.' But I'm still hearing about it," she told the publication. "At least they spelled my name right."

    On Finding Happiness

Cannon went on to say that it took her a long time to find true happiness on her own.

"I really thought I was incomplete without a man in my life. I was raised to think that you marry and you have children and that's what makes a happy life, and in my case, it wasn't," Cannon shared. "I've learned how to be happy alone, and there's great freedom in that, because then you don't settle for the broken set of dishes. You're not with somebody just because you're lonely. You're not with someone just because you're afraid to be alone."

Cannon said she's "absolutely" open to dating, but she's currently not dating anyone. While she was forced to give up her career in her marriage, she said she doesn't think she would do that again.

"I would not want to trade one for the other, but I think it's possible, when you're with somebody that really supports you and loves you, to manage both," Cannon elaborated. "We all have to be true to our highest sense of right, and listen to that and go along with that. Not listen so much to what the world says we should be doing, but to get quiet and listen to that still, small voice inside ourselves, because when I am in line with that, I'm fine, and when I go against that, I mess it up badly. I don't know if I'd want to get married again, but I would love to be able to sit down with somebody and hold hands and talk about the things that are important in life. I like that idea."
