One of the two men killed earlier this week in an attack outside of a synagogue in Manchester, England, appear to have been accidentally killed by police, authorities said Friday.
"It is currently believed that the suspect, Jihad Al Shamie, was not in possession of a firearm and the only shots fired were from [Greater Manchester Police] Authorised Firearms Officers as they worked to prevent the offender from entering the synagogue and causing further harm to our Jewish community," GMP Chief Constable Stephen Watson said in a statement.
The incident, which is subject to further forensic examination, "may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the urgently required action taken by my officers to bring this vicious attack to an end," he added.
Another person injured in the Thursday incident was also shot, the chief added, though the injuries were not life-threatening.
"It is believed that both victims were close together behind the synagogue door, as worshippers acted bravely to prevent the attacker from gaining entry," Watson said.
Police arrived at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue after GMP was notified at 9:31 a.m. local time of a stabbing and a car being driven toward members of the public, police previously said in a series of posts on social platform X.
Police identified the two men killed as Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. Along with the other person who was shot, two others remain hospitalized.
The incident, being investigated as a terrorist attack, took place on Yom Kippur, the Jewish calendar's day of atonement and fasting.
"Appalled" by the attack, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Thursday that it happening on the holiest day of the year in Judaism "makes it all the more horrific."
"My thoughts are with the loved ones of all those affected, and my thanks go to the emergency services and all the first responders," Starmer posted on X.
