Interviewing the Prince of Wales may not have been on Eugene Levy’s bingo card this year, but it’s one thing he won’t have to add to his bucket list in the future. The Emmy Award-winning actor was genuinely surprised to be joined by Prince William in an episode of his Apple TV+ series, The Reluctant Traveler, during which the future King candidly spoke about his family and the hardest year he's ever had.
Levy believes the royal's arrival on his scooter that day in Windsor set the tone for what William wanted, which was "a very casual, informal approach to a conversation."

"Right off the top, I got the impression this was gonna be a very open conversation when he pulled up on his scooter, and I could tell there was such an informality about him," the Schitt's Creek alum told Parade in an exclusive interview. "He was making me feel quite at ease, and he had a great sense of humor. So something was telling me that this was going to be a really interesting conversation."
And one that ended up being full of revelations from the heir to the throne. "While I was in conversation with him, it just seemed like this is a man that you could have a really interesting, fun conversation with, [whom] I just met, but we were getting along very well, and I felt very comfortable with him. He made me feel that comfortable. It didn't strike me till after the fact that, 'Boy, would you call this a scoop?' I never thought of it like that," Levy said. "But I think the closer we get to this episode airing, it seems that this is what some people are actually talking about."
Prince William and Eugene LevyWhen it came to his conversation with the Prince, Levy was given no barriers about what he could discuss. "We just started the tour and the conversation, and it wasn't so much a surprise to me when he opened up about the personal aspects and the more tragic aspects of his life. That came out," Levy recalled. "I don't know whether this is something that he wanted the public to kind of hear from him, but it was a very natural conversation. I think he was just honestly answering questions that I was asking, but it was an amazing day."

Though Levy was caught off guard by one remark the Prince of Wales made during their time together. He shared, "It caught me off guard when he actually said, 'Was getting drunk with Prince William on your bucket list?'"
"That gave me a strong indication that he has an amazing sense of humor, and that's how far he's willing to go to keep this kind of jovial, let's say," Levy added.
The Canadian actor also got a sense of how the day was going to go when William revealed that he was a big fan of his earlier films. "I'm glad that he opened up about seeing American Pie when he was younger. Again, there's an example of just trying to keep it honest and informal and very down to earth. I would have been shocked if he had not seen it," Levy said. "I mean, any 15, 16-year-old boy when that film came out was dying to see that movie. I wasn't surprised when he said it, but I remember it kind of hit my ear in a very 'Wow. This is gonna be a really interesting day.'"
At the end of the episode, Levy himself admitted that the bucket list experience was going to be borderline impossible to top. As for where it ranks with other standout experiences in his career, the American Pie star confessed, "I would say damn near right at the top, in a way. In terms of moments like that, I would say yes."
"I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would ever have an encounter with a member of the royal family, let alone spend a day with him and sit down in a pub and have a pint," Levy continued. "It's still surreal to me that it actually happened and how and why he picked this show to do it."
That question of why the Prince even decided to do the show is one Eugenie wishes he had asked, but didn't think of at the time. While Kensington Palace didn't share any guidance as to why the Prince of Wales chose to appear on The Reluctant Traveler, a staffer of Prince William's told Parade, "Who wouldn’t want to spend a day with Eugene?!"
The special episode of The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy featuring Prince William premiered on Oct. 3 on Apple TV+.
