Chris Dreja has passed away at the age of 79, and one of his former bandmates has some regrets. Jimmy Page, who played alongside Dreja in The Yardbirds, shared a heartfelt tribute after learning of his passing — along with a wish that they’d reconnected before it was too late.
Dreja, a founding member of the British rock band, died after years of health issues. While he may not have been as widely recognized as some of the legendary guitarists who passed through the group, including Page,Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, Dreja was a creative force behind the scenes.
Page remembered his former bandmate on Instagram, writing, “I heard today of the passing of musician Chris Dreja, who passionately played with the iconic Yardbirds, on rhythm guitar and then the bass. I hadn’t seen him in a while, and I wish I had. RIP Chris.”

News of Dreja’s passing was confirmed on Thursday, October 2 by his sister-in-law, Muriel Levy, who shared, “This is with a deep sadness that I have to announce that my brother-in-law Chris Dreja, former member of legendary band The Yardbirds, rhythm guitarist and also bass player has passed away after years of health problems…”
Fans have joined musicians in honoring Dreja’s contributions to one of the most influential bands of the 1960s. “What a legacy to be a part of,” one fan wrote on X. “Chris probably had no idea what doors were opened with what was created back then. Chris Dreja, you made your mark on the world.”
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, which inducted Dreja and The Yardbirds in 1992, also paid tribute. In a statement, they credited the band’s “innovations in feedback and distortion” for inspiring movements like psychedelic rock, progressive rock and punk.
Dreja was part of that core team, co-writing several songs during his time with The Yardbirds, including the 1966 hit “Over Under Sideways Down” and multiple tracks from their 1967 album Little Games.
Though The Yardbirds had a relatively short initial run, their legacy was long-lasting. The band became known for launching some of the greatest guitarists of all time. Their hits, including “For Your Love,” “Shapes of Things” “Heart Full of Soul” and “The Train Kept A-Rollin,’” still resonate with fans of classic rock today.
Outside of music, Dreja had a passion for photography. In fact, after The Yardbirds disbanded, he chose not to join Page’s next project, a little band that would become Led Zeppelin, and instead pursued photography. He later shot the back cover photo for Led Zeppelin’s debut album, released in 1969.
