Maureen McCormick’s Iconic ‘Bewitched’ Halloween Episode Turns 60

Maureen McCormick is best known for her role as Marcia Brady in The Brady Bunch. But four years before she debuted the role as the eldest Brady sister on the ABC sitcom, the young actress appeared in an early episode of the network’s popular comedy series Bewitched.

The episode, titled “Trick or Treat,” first aired on October 28, 1965, and in it, McCormick played a child version of Agnes Moorehead’s iconic Endora character. In the famous scene, an agitated Endora turned herself into a gypsy girl trick-or-treater. McCormick was just 9 years old at the time.

McCormick’s character used her magic on Dick York’s Darrin Stephens after knocking on his door for Halloween treats. “Cut the small talk. Whaddya got?” she cracked as he held out the candy bowl. After examining the goods and determining it was “junk,” McCormick’s mini-Endora threatened, “No dice. I’m gonna have to trick you!”And with that, she cast a spell on the unsuspecting ad man. Soon after, Darrin transformed into a werewolf, complete with claws, fangs, and a hairy face.

This wasn’t McCormick’s first appearance on Bewitched. She previously played Little Endora in the Season 1 episode “And Something Makes Three,” per IMDb. In an interview with Pop Entertainment, McCormick looked back fondly on her cameos on the witchy sitcom. “I got to fly!" she recalled.

In her 2008 book Here’s the Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Self, McCormick wrote that there was a lot of excitement in her family’s house when she landed the job on Bewitched. “I remember being awed by Elizabeth Montgomery and thinking, ‘wow, she's more beautiful in person,’” she wrote of the series star. “I also remember that in my scene I was supposed to wiggle my nose like Samantha, but I can't remember if they used my nose or Elizabeth's.”

More recently, McCormick shared a photo from her first appearance on Bewitched. In it, she wore a witch’s hat along with several other children, while Montgomery raised her hands.

“A Blast From My Past,” McCormick wrote. “Bewitched was one of my favorite shows growing up! And it was a dream to work on this show! I will always be a fan! Such great memories!!!”
