Footage of McMahan leading the crowd in X-rated chants aimed at the Masters champion prior to the second day went viral on social media.

She could be seen shouting ‘f*** you Rory’ into a microphone as the toxic atmosphere in New York intensified.

McMahan stepped down from the role before Sunday’s singles and apologised to McIlroy.

A statement from the PGA of America read: “Heather has extended an apology to Rory Mcllroy and Ryder Cup Europe and has stepped down from hosting the first tee of the Ryder Cup.”

She has now commented on the incident for the first time in her latest podcast episode.

Speaking on her Absolutely Not show, McMahan explained: “If you saw the headlines this weekend, it was a headline that ‘Heather McHahan, MC of the first tee, is released from her job after yelling f*** you Rory to the crowd.’

“I understand my responsibility in this. However, it is a little interesting because I do think that there needs to be some context around what exactly happened.”

The 45th Ryder Cup was marred by toxic abuse from the crowd, especially in the direction of McIlroy.

His fourball match on Saturday saw several flashpoints with both McIlroy and Shane Lowry firing back at spectators.

His wife Erica also had a beer thrown at her, with several fans removed from the course across the weekend.

McMahan has hit back at suggestions she was to blame for the atmosphere, adding: “Absolutely not. I put my foot down.

“I cannot control what 40,000 drunk men at a golf tournament do, much less could I have controlled them that morning, 4,000 of them. Like, it was very overwhelming.

“I have to say something, a lot of these articles didn’t have the facts straight and explained it as potty mouth, foul-mouthed woman from America.

“First, you would never call a male comic potty-mouthed or foul-mouthed.

“So that’s strike one – I’m a woman. But also, like, is this the Salem witch hunt trials – you’re telling me I had so much power over a group of men?

“You’re telling me that I have that much power that I then told them to go out the rest of the day, continue to drink until they’re absolutely in a stupor and say horrible things to professional athletes? What?

“That’s where I had to draw the line and be, like, ‘Hey, that makes no sense to me.'”

The backlash towards McMahan also crossed the line itself, as she revealed she had received death threats on social media.

Discussing what she will take from the ordeal, she said: “I’ve had a lesson in media. I have learned a lesson in communications.

“I have learned a lesson in moving forward jobs of just being like I need specific parameters. I need to know exactly what is asked of me.”

McMahan then concluded: “Unfortunately, it happened on an international stage and unfortunately I’ve never gotten so many death threats from Ireland.”

    McIlroy on Ryder Cup atmosphere

Her comments come after McIlroy had addressed the behaviour of the crowd following the conclusion of the event.

McIlroy hit back at the USA fans during Team Europe’s press conference on SundayGetty

The Northern Irishman was asked about the atmosphere at Bethpage Black during Team Europe’s post-tournament press conference.

McIlroy admitted: “Golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week.

“Golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you good life lessons. It teaches you etiquette. It teaches you how to play by the rules. It teaches you how to respect people.

“Sometimes this week we didn’t see that. So no, this should not be acceptable in the Ryder Cup.

“We will be making sure to say to our fans in Ireland in 2027 that what happened here this week is not acceptable.”
