Back in 1984, the rock band Scandal was on top of the world. Fronted by singer Patty Smyth (not Patti Smith), the group had several popular videos in heavy rotation on MTV — including "Goodbye to You" and "Love's Got a Line on You" — and a top ten hit song with "The Warrior." But Scandal's success was short-lived...and as Smyth revealed in a recently-shared interview, she never liked their most famous video to begin with.
As Smyth explained in the clip, she wasn't on board with the concept for the video for their biggest hit, "The Warrior," from the very beginning.
"I was just like, 'Who are these guys, and why are they making me do this video?'" she recalled.

"They thought it was great, and I guess they were right, because it was a very popular video," she added. "But what was interesting about that — and this was a thing where in your career, you see, because I had all that makeup on, and I'm not really in the video that much, I did not become more recognizable or well-known as an artist as a result of having a huge hit record. And that was weird. But I noticed it was like, wow, you know, like people didn't almost kind of put the two together."
Why Patty Smyth turned down Eddie Van Halen's offer to replace David Lee Roth
Unfortunately, Scandal split up in 1985, shortly after completing their tour in support of "The Warrior." The same year, David Lee Roth left Van Halen to pursue a solo career, prompting Eddie Van Halen to offer Smyth the slot of lead singer in his band...but she wasn't sure it was the right career move, particularly considering she was eight months pregnant at the time and not much of a partier.
"They were heavy drinkers. I don’t drink. I never saw myself living in L.A. I was like, 'I’m from New York, we don’t move to L.A.,'" she told Stereogum in 2020.
"It’s all semantics because if [Eddie] had said to me, 'Let’s make a record,' then I would have said yes to that," Smyth explained. "But joining the band — to me then, 'Oh god, they fight all the time, him and his brother, and I don’t want to get into a volatile situation.' And I was probably heavily hormoned out because I was eight months pregnant, so there was a state of mind that I was in of how I need to take care of myself. But I regretted turning him down. For a long time I regretted it. When you start to have regrets, I was like, 'Oh man I would’ve made so much money.'"
Smyth would go on to release a self-titled solo album in 1992 which featured one of her most well-known songs, "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," a duet with the Eagles' Don Henley, and — in a surprising twist — got back together with Scandal in 2004 on VH1’s Bands Reunited. As for Van Halen, Sammy Hagar took Roth's place...and the rest is rock history.
