Week 6 of the high school football season is here.

This week’s lineup features Pittsburg traveling to Los Gatos, De La Salle playing host to San Diego powerhouse Cathedral Catholic, Valley Christian taking on Archbishop Mitty, Sacred Heart Cathedral playing rival Archbishop Riordan and more.

Friday

Cathedral Catholic-San Diego (5-0) at No. 1 De La Salle (5-0), 7 p.m.: This should be De La Salle’s toughest test during the regular season. The Spartans are coming off an impressive win over St. Mary’s-Stockton, shutting out the high-powered offense en route to a 36-7 victory. De La Salle’s three-back trio of Duece Jones-Drew, Jaden Jefferson and Brady Smith has been lethal this season as they contributed to De La Salle’s 297-yard rushing performance last week. De La Salle’s vaunted defense will have a tall task trying to stop Cathedral Catholic. The Dons are led by Cal-bound quarterback Brady Smith, four-star running back/safety Honor Faalave and three-star wide receiver Parker Johnson. These storied programs played each other twice in the MaxPreps era (2004-present), with De La Salle winning 28-20 in 2022 and 49-21 in 2021. HSRatings.com gives De La Salle an 80% chance of winning, predicting a 27-14 final score. – Nathan Canilao

No. 2 Archbishop Riordan (4-0, 1-0) vs. No. 18 Sacred Heart Cathedral (3-1, 1-0) at Kezar Stadium, 6 p.m.: Riordan has won the past two games between these West Catholic Athletic League rivals – 63-34 last year, 49-19 in 2023 – but SHC holds a 12-10 advantage in the series since 2004. Riordan’s success is no secret. Vanderbilt-bound senior Michael Mitchell Jr. has been phenomenal in wins over McClymonds, Monte Vista, Pittsburg and St. Francis, throwing for 17 touchdowns and just one interception. Judge Nash has been on the receiving end of 10 of the TDs. SHC has its own share of playmakers. Quarterback Jayden Crane has passed for 818 yards and 10 TDs. Legend Williams is the Irish’s primary running back, with 418 yards and three rushing TDs. SHC has wins over Sacred Heart Prep, Berkeley and Bellarmine, which gave up 57 first-half points in a 71-14 defeat against the Irish last week. SHC’s loss was at Folsom, 49-7. HSRatings.com picks Riordan 48-14. – Darren Sabedra

No. 3 Pittsburg (3-1) at No. 5 Los Gatos (2-2), 7 p.m.: The best nonleague game to grace the South Bay this season should provide a good tune-up for two teams chasing big things in future Central Coast Section and North Coast Section playoff runs. Pitt and Los Gatos have dominated their leagues, the Bay Valley and Peninsula, for years. The Pirates have won the past two matchups between the teams over the last couple of years. Can the Wildcats get a win at home this time? QB Callum Schweitzer and RB Grayson Doslak will look to keep Los Gatos’ high-octane offense humming after a bye week, while Pittsburg will look to either Javale Jones or Carlos Torres – possibly both – at quarterback. HSRatings.com projects another classic, this time a 42-40 Pittsburg win on the road. — Christian Babcock 

Livermore (5-0) at No. 7 California (5-0), 7 p.m.: It will be a battle of two East Bay Athletic League teams on Friday night – California from the upper-tier Mountain Division, Livermore from the Valley Division. Livermore’s offense has been rolling to start the season, averaging just over 38 points per game. Senior quarterback Matteo Lortie has been excellent thus far, throwing for 1,289 yards and 12 touchdowns through the first five games. His favorite target, wide receiver CT Harper, is averaging just 114 receiving yards per game. But can the Cowboys stop California? The San Ramon school has been impressive through the first half of the season, with wins over Monterey Trail and McClymonds. Quarterback Arjun Banerjee has tossed 11 touchdowns and has a QB rating of 130.9. Running back Jordan Lee and wide receiver Luke Taylor have been crucial in powering California’s offensive attack. HSRatings.com gives California picks to win 31-14. – Nathan Canilao

No. 12 Valley Christian (2-2, 0-1) vs. No. 10 Archbishop Mitty (3-1, 1-0) at Foothill College, 7 p.m.: Mitty comes into this WCAL game having won three in a row, including an impressive victory on the road over defending CCS Open Division champion St. Ignatius last week. Valley limps in having lost at home to Serra 41-6 in a WCAL opener on Saturday. That said, the Warriors have had the upper-hand against Mitty historically, going 18-6 against the Monarchs since 2004, which includes blowout wins the past two seasons. Mitty appears vastly improved, led by running back Lazaro Faraj-Washington, who has rushed for 626 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Valley running back Ekiah McLemore also has seven touchdowns on the ground. HSRatings.com projects a nailbiter, with Mitty winning 27-26. – Darren Sabedra

Saturday

No. 16 St. Ignatius (1-3, 0-1) at No. 8 Serra (1-3, 1-0), 1:30 p.m.: Don’t be fooled by the records. Both teams in this matchup have been tested time and again in the early going and should factor into the West Catholic Athletic League race one way or another this season. After an epic nonleague slate that included dates with De La Salle, Folsom and St. John Bosco, Serra picked up its first win with a 41-6 rout of Valley Christian on the road. Freshman quarterback William Orr had an impressive debut for the Padres last week, throwing for 147 yards and a TD. The Padres also ran for 167 yards and forced multiple turnovers. SI will look to its speedy two-way playmakers on the outside like Zui Shelton and Ty Hicks, the latter of whom had a 47-yard catch last week against Mitty. HSRatings.com projects a 44-17 Serra win. — Christian Babcock
