On October 1, the heartbreaking news broke that famed primatologist and conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall died at 91 while on a speaking tour in the United States. She left behind a legacy of groundbreaking scientific discoveries and environmental activism, and the world is mourning the loss, including the royal family.
The morning after Goodall's death, Prince William took to social media to share an emotional statement about the loss — along with highlighting the ways that she made a true difference in the world.

— The Prince and Princess of Wales (@KensingtonRoyal) October 2, 2025"The world has lost an extraordinary voice with the passing of Dame Jane Goodall," the Prince of Wales wrote. "Her boundless curiosity, compassion and pioneering spirit transformed our understanding of the natural world. She challenged us all to make a difference and inspired me and countless others to work to protect our planet. Jane Goodall made a difference."
William signed off his message with his initial, "W."
He's not the only member of his family to react to Goodall's passing publicly. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also issued a statement to People hours after her death was confirmed.
“Dr. Jane Goodall DBE was a visionary humanitarian, scientist, friend to the planet, and friend to us,” said the statement. “Her commitment to changing lives extends beyond what the world saw, and also to what we personally felt. She held our son, Archie, when he was first born, and showered love and care to those who were privileged to know her. She will be deeply missed.”
Jane Goodall's Connection to the Royal Family
Of course, Goodall was from England, but that wasn't her only connection to the royal family.
Back in 2004, she was given one of the highest honors that are handed out to women in the Commonwealth when she was made Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in a ceremony led by King Charles, who was then still a prince.

Still, Goodall candidly admitted that she wasn't all that impressed by being offered the damehood the way others might be, as she once told Newsweek.
"I don't remember too much about it because, those are not the kind of things that fill me with — I mean, yes, it's an honor, but I'd rather be given a little pressed flower by a small child who's pressed it for me because she loves me and wants to give me something to remember her by," she said. "Those reach the heart."
