The temperature difference between the cold air outside and the warmer air inside the causes condensation to build up inside your car.

But the top tip, shared by motoring expert Ben Pitcher, could stop drivers losing visibility – as well as saving them from a whopping £2,500 fine.

The Highway Code says drivers should always completely demist their windows before setting off and condensation can obstruct this.

If you try to drive with an obscured view you could be fined up to £2,500 and get penalty points on your licence, especially if it leads to an accident.

Ben, who works at the diesel particulate filter cleaning service DPF Experts, has urged motorists leave teabags on their dashboard.

This is because they act as sponges to soak up excess moisture.

He added that black or green tea are the best options to choose for optimal absorption.

Speaking to the Express, Ben said: “Placing them in your car can help reduce condensation, especially in colder months.”

The motoring expert admitted tea bags aren’t as effective as professional dehumidifiers – but reminded people they’re a hell of a lot cheaper.

For best results, he advised placing multiple teabags as close to the windscreen as possible – you can buy a packet for just 40p at Asda’s.

Ben also mentioned a second household item you can try – the little silica gel packets that often come inside packaging.

Just as these are designed to reduce dampness inside your parcels, they can serve the same function in your car.

Plus, they can be collecting at no expense.

Ben said: “Collecting a few and placing them around your car can help control condensation.

“While they won’t clear foggy windows instantly, they can help reduce moisture and keep your windscreen clearer for longer.”

A group of car experts have come with another purr-fect solution – a sock filled with cat litter.

One Facebook user has described the cat-litter tip as “fantastic” while another simply said: “Love it.”

As Swansway Motor Group (SMG) explained in a blog post: “Many drivers experience the frustration of fogged-up windows during the colder months.

“This is often due to wet shoes, damp clothing, or melting snow, which increases the humidity within the car.

“However, there’s a simple little trick that can prevent this – using cat litter.”

Cat litter is a relatively cheap product, with B&M currently selling a Snowflake Wood Based five-litre bag for £2.49.

“Cat litter, particularly the clay-based type, is designed to absorb moisture, making it the perfect material for reducing humidity inside your car,” SMG continued.

“By filling a cotton sock with the litter, taping it shut, and placing it on your dashboard, you create a natural dehumidifier that stops condensation from forming on the windows.

“This trick is especially useful in autumn and winter when fogged windows are more common.”
