WETHERSPOONS has hiked the price of popular menu items following Labour’s tax raid on business.
The pub chain, which has 800 boozers, has hiked meal deal prices by 20p and added 10p to scores of popular brews.
It follows a warning from Wetherspoon’s boss Sir Tim Martin in May that the price of a pint would jump by 20p in May due to higher taxes and cost pressures following the Budget.
Prices vary depending on which pub you visit.
At The Oxted Inn branch in Oxted, Surrey, popular brews have all gone up 10p in price or between two and four per cent – meaning a pint of Carlsberg is now £2.59, a Budweiser £2.94 and a Stella Artois £3.99.
Bargain brews are still available with a Ruddles Best costing just £1.89 and a Worthington’s just £1.96 while a Guinness will set stout fans back £3.40 a pint.
Meal deal fans are also being hit in the pocket.
A Big Smoke burger combo will now set you back 20p extra or two per cent at £10.19 with a soft drink or £11.72 with an alcoholic beverage in Oxted.
Pub classics such as freshly battered fish and chips will also now cost you 20p more or two per cent extra at £10.99 with a soft drink or £12.52 with an alcoholic tipple.
A large breakfast is now £6.09 at the Surrey branch while a traditional breakfast is £3.79 and a small breakfast still just £2.89.
Hot drink prices, including refillable tea, coffee and hot chocolate, have also soared 10p or eight per cent from £1.19 to £1.29.
There is some good news as the prices of some products have remained unchanged including Bud light, Poretti, 1664, Shipyard, Brewdog Punk IPA, Stowford Press cider, as well as draught Pepsi and lemonade.
We last reported on the pub giant hiking prices in January when the price of drinks went up 15p and meal deals by 30p.
While last week we told how the chain slashed prices of all of its food and drink to as little as £1.66 for a day only.
Bosses offered a 7.5% discount on everything as part of its Tax Equality Day campaign.
The promotion meant bitter fans could snap up a pint of Ruddles Best (one of the cheapest beers sold at Spoons), for just £1.66.
Fans of the chain are expected to be hit hard by the price rises.
Martyn James, independent consumer champion, said: “It’s getting harder and harder to get a bargain these days.
“It’s clear the economy is struggling if ‘Spoons is forced to put up their prices.
“Every penny counts these days, so it may be time to say goodbye to getting in the rounds and time to think about scouring the menu for a cheaper meal deal to save some cash.”
Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin told us: “Wetherspoon has always tried to remain as competitive as possible.
“We hope that our prices will still be reasonable in spite of these increases.”
How can I save money at Wetherspoons?
FREE refills - Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day.
Check a map – Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other.
So if you’re planning a pint at a Spoons, it’s worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you’re settling in at the cheapest.
Choose your day – Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights.
For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual.
Pick-up vouchers – Students can often pick up voucher books in their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled.
Get appy – The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table – but you don’t need to be in the pub to use it.
Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play.
Check the date – Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry.
It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14.
As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.
