Early playoff implications for Alabama after Saturday’s game

Alabama’s 24-21 victory over Georgia on Saturday was critical for the team’s playoff and SEC Championship hopes.

Playoff hopes

The Crimson Tide was low in the SEC standings due to not having a game in conference play and having a loss on its record. It was also ranked No. 17 in the AP Poll because its wins were against unranked teams, and its one loss was against Florida State in Week 1, which was unranked at the time.

“I’m not satisfied by that win,” defensive lineman LT Overton said. “I’m not satisfied until we get a national championship under our belt.”

Alabama is now ranked No. 6 in the SEC standings and No. 10 in the AP Poll, a big jump from the week prior.

If the Crimson Tide were to go undefeated in conference play, it would receive a spot in the conference championship and a guaranteed playoff spot.

With Alabama sitting at No. 10 in the latest AP Poll, it sneaks into the playoffs at either an 11 or 12 seed, were the season to end today. If Alabama captures the SEC Championship, it will be looking at a top-five seed.

    Upcoming schedule

The Crimson Tide is set to face five ranked teams in SEC play, but after a win against Georgia, arguably its toughest matchup of the season, it sits in a good spot for the playoffs. If Alabama plays the way it did in the first half Saturday, it should have no problem reaching the SEC Championship.

Alabama also hosts three of these five ranked opponents, giving it an advantage it lacked last season. Three of these ranked opponents are ones the team lost to on the road last season: Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma.

    Difference in rankings this season

The College Football Playoff committee and the AP Poll value tough losses and strength of schedule when ranking teams, but changes to the selection process look to improve the rankings.

“All of these modifications will help the selection committee as they rank the top 25 teams,” CFP executive director Rich Clark said in an interview with CBS. “We feel these changes will help construct a postseason bracket that recognizes the best performances and teams on the field during the regular season.”

Clark added that there were many experts who weighed in on the new ranking systems and believed it was beneficial to college football rankings.

Notre Dame had two losses this season, but was still ranked when it was 0-2 because its losses were to two top 15 teams. Last season, this record would have put them out of the top 25 completely.

Georgia lost to Alabama, which was ranked No. 17, while Alabama lost to Florida State, which was unranked at the time.

For Alabama, its best win currently looks like a win against top-five Georgia for the second consecutive season. Should it get through the tough schedule ahead with no losses, or just one loss, its playoff chances will remain high.
