Students react to Big Brother Season 27 finale

The Season 27 finale of the reality competition series Big Brother aired on CBS Sept. 28, and a new champion, Ashley Hollis, took home the $750,000 grand prize.

Big Brother, which originated in the Netherlands in the late 1990s, has been an American favorite since 2000. For several months, competitors, also known as houseguests, are locked together in a house where they must participate in competitions and vote to evict each other, all while having no access to the outside world and being recorded at all times.

Emily Denton, a sophomore majoring in communicative disorders, has been watching Big Brother since she was a child. Though she watched all of Season 27, she said it does not rank among her favorite seasons of the show.

“I feel like every single episode I got mad at it because it did not go my way. The final three were none of my original picks I would have had in the finale, which was unfortunate, and all my favorite people got sent to the jury one after another,” Denton said.

Though she didn’t expect Hollis to win the entire season, Denton was relieved that the other contestants in the final three, Vince Panaro and Morgan Pope, did not get the grand prize.

“Morgan and Vince were very manipulative characters the entire game and they really aggravated me. Vince has a girlfriend outside of the house, and I would say they [Vince and Morgan] were even more than friends, and that was not a characteristic I was looking for in my Big Brother winner,” Denton said.

Panaro and Pope sparked controversy for their more than friendly connection on the show. Their “cheatmance” even resulted in Panaro’s girlfriend of seven years allegedly calling it quits while he was on the show.

Armani Dixon, a sophomore majoring in news media, enjoyed watching Panaro get called out on social media for his “cheatmance” and other unsavory game moves.

“Vince was so bad at taking accountability for his actions and he acted like such a victim,” Dixon said. “But like you know you aren’t supposed to be like sleeping in the bed with this girl and doing all this stuff.”

Dixon was relieved to find out that Hollis won the show over Panaro and Pope, though he said it did come as a bit of a surprise.

“If I had watched the beginning of the season and you would’ve told me that I would’ve been like ‘you’re joking,’ but from what I did see with the season progressing I’m happy that she did win,” Dixon said.

Loriann Lear, a junior majoring in English, has been watching Big Brother for seven years. She said this season was not her favorite because it felt more heavily produced than past seasons and she did not feel Hollis deserved her win.

“Everyone in there was just kind of really fake to each other, and I watch that show to watch people really fight with each other and see more drama,” Lear said.

Though she did not enjoy this season as much as others, Lear said she was relieved that her favorite player Keanu Soto was named America’s Favorite Houseguest.

“I voted for him, and I really liked him, so I only watched the finale to see every other house guest’s reaction to him winning America’s favorite because they all really didn’t like him,” Lear said.
