Trump Official Allegedly Gave Free Tickets to GOP Group to Heckle Beloved Folk Artist

Calling today's political climate an "onslaught" of information is honestly an understatement. There are so many issues constantly making their way into the newsfeed, but fans of folk music might be extra riled up after learning beloved guitarist Yasmin Williams may have been targeted by a Trump administration official.

The young guitarist, who exploded on social media around 2012, performed at the Kennedy Center for the Arts on September 18. However, Williams had reportedly been engaged in heated email exchanges with Richard Grenell, who was named interim executive director at the Kennedy Center after it was taken over by Trump himself in February.

The subject of the emails revolved around Williams’ opposition to changes in the institution's DEI initiatives that led to certain shows being canceled, according to Rolling Stone.

What Did Ric Grenell Allegedly Do to Yasmin Williams?

Williams considered canceling her appearance in protest after the board of trustees was overturned but instead extended an olive branch to Grenell to come to her show: “… only if you can stomach sitting next to people who may not look like you or have your same politics… and if you can handle a polite verbal jab (or two) from me.”

While it’s unknown if Grenell attended, the Kennedy Center Staffers Union alleges that the office set aside 50 seats for members of the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay conservative group, and instructed them to disrupt the performance.

Loud boos could be heard when she said: “I don’t support anyone affiliated with the Trump administration at all, especially you, Ric Grenell.”

The guitarist shared the email that circulated encouraging people to be disruptive and combative.

“The 'office of the president' also reserved 50 tickets to my show with clearly dubious intentions," she wrote. "I’m certain that these folks have no interest in my music at all (or art itself), so why would they come?"

She then explained that staff members working at her show had no idea of this until it began, which is why she had to be escorted out of the building by several security guards.

“This is clearly a calculated attempt to intimidate and harass me at my own show, as well as the staff working the show,” she wrote. “This is completely unacceptable and I will not allow this to go unnoticed. I will not be harassed and intimidated by anyone, especially these folks.”

The union is demanding action, stating that “harassment and intimidation of artists has no place at our national cultural center. This stops now.”
