ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Social Security Administration office on Main Street in Rochester was open Wednesday but offering a reduced number of services due to the government shutdown.
In office, you can apply for benefits, replace a lost or missing Social Security payment, and issue new or replacement Social Security cards in addition to other services.
But there are a few things you’ll need to go online for. That includes replacing your Medicare card, issuing a proof of income letter, and updating earnings records.
A Social Security recipient Richard Nedwidek told News10NBC he’s concerned about a lack of bipartisanship in Congress.
“Their problem is, is that one side we can work with the other side doesn’t make any difference if it’s Democrats or Republicans or not, unless it’s their idea, they’ll turn it down,” said Nedwidek.
News10NBC also spoke with New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney. He said this shutdown means the government is not working for the people.
“We have a responsibility at all levels of government to make sure that government is serving everyone, regardless of whether they’re a Democrat or a Republican,” Cooney said. “And when you see that type of change happen in our local Social Security office you know that government has stopped working for the people that they serve.”
