First Alert Weather In-Depth: September was Rochester’s second driest ever
Weather In-Depth: It’s Official: September was Rochester’s 2nd Driest EverUpdates on local, state and national News are detailed by the News10NBC Morning Team, along with traffic, sports and the weather forecast.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — September has come to a close, and it was a historic one for Rochester. The Rochester Airport, which is where our official climate data is recorded, reported measurable precipitation only 4 days out of the entire month. Our total rainfall was three tenths of an inch — 9% of what we usually get in September.

This officially makes September 2025 the second driest ever for Rochester, only behind September 1960 in which we received 0.28″ of rain. This followed a very dry July and August, where our rainfall was 52% and 50% the average amount respectively, and so our drought has only gotten worse.

What is even more remarkable is that the two months before that, May and June, featured superb amounts of rain. May 2025 was the 10th wettest on record. Two top-ten months, in two opposite categories, in the same year. That certainly proves how volatile the weather in Rochester can be.

Unfortunately, the drought is likely to get worse before it gets better. October is expected to be slightly below average in terms of rainfall for Rochester. For reference, the normal amount of rain in October is 3.22″. So, while we will (hopefully) have much more rain than we did in September, it’s not going to be enough to lift us out of the drought, at least for now.

P.S. For those who are curious, the Rochester Airport became the official climate data recording site in 1940; before that, it moved around a few times in different spots downtown. Daily measurements began in 1871. In the 154 Septembers since then, only one was drier than this one.
