When the Cleveland Browns take the field at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday to take on the Minnesota Vikings, they’ll be led by a new starting quarterback.
On Wednesday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Cleveland is making the switch from veteran Joe Flacco to 2025 third-round pick Dillon Gabriel. Flacco will serve as the team’s backup. The team has since confirmed the news:

Ideally, I think Kevin Stefanski would have preferred to wait a little longer to make this move, but Cleveland’s offense has been in a bad way all season, though their defense is one of the better units in the NFL. Through four games, the Browns were averaging just 13.2 points per game with Joe Flacco throwing for fewer than 200 yards in three of the four starts. That’s just not going to get it done.
While Gabriel’s NFL experience is limited to the preseason and clean-up time against Detroit last Sunday, he has plenty of college football experience. He spent six years in college at UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon, and in five of those seasons, he started 10+ games. In training camp, he was also firmly in the starting quarterback battle, getting several first-team reps before Flacco ultimately won the job.
Gabriel was one of two quarterbacks drafted by Cleveland, along with fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders. While both earned reps early in camp, Gabriel seemed to separate himself. Sanders will remain the team’s third-string quarterback.
The Bears host Cleveland on December 14th at Soldier Field. One would assume that unless things go really badly for Dillon Gabriel over the next few weeks, he will be the opposing quarterback that Ben Johnson’s team will see.
