The Chicago Cubs won a playoff game at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2017. To put that in perspective, the Chicago Bears have started nine different quarterbacks since that last home playoff win. So to say that it has been a long time coming would be putting it mildly.
If you’re curious about the nine quarterbacks, I’ll list them later in this post.
“Coach said it the other week. The book on this team is that if we get the game close, we were going to lose. And what did we do today? That’s a culture win fellas. We talk about changing the culture, that’s how we do it.”
If you’ve read my stuff for long enough (P.S. – Thanks for reading!), then you’re familiar with me writing about how real organizational change begins with putting new eyes on old problems. And that is exactly what Ben Johnson brings as a first-year head coach for the Bears. On top of that, he brings the perspective of being a rival. Byard sharing that anecdote about Johnson sharing the book on the Bears keys us in on how other teams (rightfully) felt about previous teams. But Ben is here to change that narrative. A win against the Raiders won’t change it, but it represents a potential stepping stone. Matt was all over the pending changes at left tackle, with all signs pointing to Theo Benedet taking over for Braxton Jones. It has been quite the climb for Benedet, who went from being a viral sensation because of his cameo on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” to being on the cusp of starting at left tackle on Monday Night Football in Week 6 after the Bears return from the bye week. You can’t script that stuff!! I feel bad for Braxton Jones. It has been clear since training camp that he isn’t the same player he was before suffering that season-ending ankle injury late in the 2024 season. Perhaps this should serve as a reminder that there is a difference between being healthy and being healthy enough to play left tackle at the NFL level. Hindsight being what it is, Jones and the Bears probably would’ve been better off slow-playing his return. Then again, I can’t blame him for expediting his return. It’s a shame that it will probably cost him some money on the open market as he is set to hit free agency at year’s end. Patrick continues his QB1 evaluation series, underscoring how the team’s “grimy” Week 4 win against the Las Vegas Raiders provides more evidence of Caleb Williams’ growth. The historic significance of the Bears’ win against the Raiders was that it was the 800th in the history of the franchise (in regular season games):One more game ball to give out for the 800th win! pic.twitter.com/3RdxAk69x4

— Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) September 29, 2025 The Bears quarterbacks who have started games for Chicago’s football team in the time that spanned between Cubs playoff wins at Wrigley Field: Mitchell Trubisky, Chase Daniel, Nick Foles, Andy Dalton, Justin Fields, Trevor Siemian, Nathan Peterman, Tyson Bagent, and Caleb Williams. In other quarterback news, the Cleveland Browns announced they are starting rookie Dillon Gabriel in the team’s Week 5 game against the Minnesota Vikings. Fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders will remain the QB3 behind Gabriel and veteran backup Joe Flacco. Who will be Cleveland’s QB1 when they travel to face the Bears in Week 15? Something to keep an eye on: The Baltimore Sun reports that Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson could miss 2-3 weeks with a hamstring injury. Baltimore has a Week 7 bye, so that means Jackson would miss just two games if that timeline is accurate. Unfortunately, that would put him back in the lineup in time to face the Bears in Week 8. Go figure. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio makes a good observation in pointing out that the aforementioned Shedeur Sanders should not have told Baltimore not to draft him because he could have set himself up to be Lamar’s heir apparent. Whoopsiedoodle. The Ravens also share news about linebacker Roquan Smith, who is also set to miss a few weeks due to a hamstring injury. I wish I had an inkling of why it feels like there has been an uptick in lower-body injuries in the early part of this NFL season.MORE FROM BLEACHER NATION BEARS: Go Ad-Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
