It’s official: The Cleveland Browns are benching Joe Flacco.
NFL rookie Dillon Gabriel will start at quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings in London.
The Browns announced their decision on Wednesday, suggesting Gabriel had ‘demonstrated his ability to move the offense down the field, operate in the pocket and connect with receivers’ during training camp, joint practices and the preseason.
He has now earned his chance to lead Cleveland’s offense, and will do it on the international stage in England.
But even after Gabriel’s promotion, fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders will have to wait for a shot of his own.
Browns make Sanders decision after benching Flacco
According to NFL insider Dianna Russini, the 144th overall pick of the 2025 draft will ‘remain third on the depth chart’ and Flacco will be the new backup.
Cleveland’s decision to bench the veteran comes after the team went 1-3 through the first stretch of games.
Flacco completed 93 of 160 passing attempts for 815 passing yards and two touchdowns during that run, and he also threw six interceptions.
Despite the poor run, head coach Kevin Stefanski came out to defend his starting QB in the wake of Sunday’s blowout loss against the Detroit Lions, which saw fans begging for Sanders to play.
“I understand the question, especially when we are struggling the way we are on offense,” he said, when asked about benching Flacco.
“But that’s not our focus right now. To have any success on either side of the ball, you need to play well and play together.
“Right now, we have too many things going wrong, and we all own that. It isn’t because of one player.”

News of a changing of the guard at quarterback quickly spread on social media, with many fans sharing excitement about Gabriel getting his opportunity.
“We finally get to see if these rookies are our future,” one wrote on X.
“Might as well give the kid a shot,” another said.
“We believe in you. Bring us to the promise land,” a third wrote.
“Finally,” a fourth said.
Others, though, called for Sanders to move up the depth chart alongside Gabriel.
Fans are still desperate to see Sanders get a shot with the BrownsGETTY“I do like Dillon. It’s unfortunate Dillon is in this situation. There’s no doubt in my mind that Shedeur will end up being the starter at some point,” one suggested.
“Shedeur had an amazing preseason,” another pointed out.
“Put Sanders in,” a third demanded.
Gabriel’s promotion to the starting role is the first step into Cleveland’s new era, but some fans won’t be satisfied until they see Sanders on the field instead.
