ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Dozens of members from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints community in Rochester held a rare candlelight vigil to honor those killed in the recent Michigan church shooting. The attack left four dead and eight injured, prompting local members to unite in mourning.
“Tonight, we felt it important to gather together as a community to mourn together, to unite, to mourn and to think of our friends and people of our faith in Michigan,” said Kelsey Coles, who helped organize the event.
Coles shared that she has attended many candlelight vigils of other faiths during tragedies and found them impactful. “I found it meaningful to gather together, to connect, to reflect, to ponder, and to pray together,” she said.
Cary Jensen, another organizer, expressed surprise and gratitude for the turnout. “We originally planned this with Sister Coles, and I thought it might just be our two families and, you know, 20 people here,” Jensen said. “Seeing the flowers that somebody put out there yesterday morning, that’s a really powerful show of the support of this community.”
Cory Boyer, a church member, appreciated the presence of congregants from Batavia, Warsaw, and Geneseo, as well as community members. “It meant a lot to us,” Boyer said.
The FBI is currently investigating the Michigan attack as a targeted act of violence.
