Report: Blackhawks Actively Trying to Move Lukas Reichel

The Blackhawks are nearing the end of training camp. There are decisions to be made on which young players make the NHL roster to start the regular season, which ones start the season in Rockford to get some additional seasoning and… maybe some don’t start the year with the Blackhawks at all.

Lukas Reichel isn’t dressing to face the Detroit Red Wings in the Blackhawks’ first preseason game. And his spot on the roster has been in question from the start of training camp, when general manager Kyle Davidson said this was a “prove it” year for the 23-year-old former first-round pick.

Reichel has been a focus of a lot of attention from Blackhawks fans since he arrived in 2020 as a fast forward — something the organization was lacking at the time. But, if you just search for Reichel here on Bleacher Nation or elsewhere, you’ll find a lot of headlines about disappointing play, healthy scratches and questions about his future.

The question now is: will Reichel be on the Blackhawks’ roster to start the regular season in six days?

Frank Seravalli was asked that question on Bleacher Report on Tuesday, and reiterated that Reichel is on the market. Seravalli said, in part, that the Blackhawks “are working on a deal to have him land somewhere likely before next week when rosters are completed; this is not gonna be a big return, we’re talking probably a mid to late round pick.”

    Why?

I think there’s a central issue at hand with Reichel that we all need at least acknowledge. What made Reichel stand out in the Blackhawks’ pipeline when he was drafted 17th overall in 2020 was his speed. The Blackhawks organization lacked giddyup in a big way five years ago, and Reichel truly has elite speed.

Here’s the problem for Reichel: since Kyle Davidson took over as general manager, speed has become a priority trait at the draft and in trades. When Reichel was once the lone sportscar in a garage full of Winnebagos, he is now part of a fleet of race-ready cars.

And, as the Blackhawks have filled the pipeline with speed and skill, Reichel hasn’t taken advantage of the opportunities in front of him to show he belongs in the NHL. Yes, skating on a line with Pat Maroon and Craig Smith wasn’t exactly going to promote what he’s best at. It did give him a spot on the ice with two veterans who know how to play in the league.

Speed isn’t everything. Ask Jack Skille. And Viktor Stalberg. And Andreas Athanasiou.

This new report from Seravalli echoes what Scott Powers wrote at the The Athletic on Monday, which included the following:

“If Reichel played the way he did in the first two preseason games in a past camp, the conversation around him might be different. But the Blackhawks’ patience with Reichel has changed in that time, and the organization brought in many more hyped prospects since then. The Blackhawks aren’t just looking for positive signs and hoping Reichel will figure it out in the NHL any longer. Oliver Moore, Ryan Greene and other prospects have moved up the chart and are now being prioritized.”

At this point, Reichel hasn’t been able to stay in the lineup for three different Blackhawks head coaches and is struggling to force his way into the conversation with a fourth.

As Kenny Rogers once told us, you’ve gotta know when to hold ’em and know when to fold ’em. It appears the Blackhawks might have reached the time to pass on this hand and move on to the next.

    For what?

The Blackhawks have been shopping Reichel since February with limited attraction on the market. Now, Seravalli is reporting the Blackhawks might get a mid-round pick back for Reichel. That sounds about right, given his service time and production.

Could the Blackhawks look to flip him for another underwhelming young player who similarly needs a change of scenery (like Nick Robertson in Toronto)? Maybe.

But I get the sense the Blackhawks like their own pipeline and would rather clear the roster spot for someone else who’s developing to take when ready than bring in another reclamation project. We’ve reached the stage of the rebuild in which the Blackhawks want their own prospects to sink or swim — not use the roster as a career preservation place for other teams’ failed prospects.
