Bob Dylan Released Music Considered to Be His Greatest Comeback 28 Years Ago Today

When Bob Dylanreleased his 30th studio album, Time Out of Mind, on Sept. 30, 1997, the music legend may not have envisioned just how successful it would be. Not only did the album mark the first time he released totally new music in seven years, but it also scored three Grammy awards, including the coveted win of Album of the Year.

As Sirius XM host Eric Alper wrote in a post on X about the music milestone on Tuesday, Dylan's Time Out of Mind was "hailed as his great comeback," and it would go on to shape his career and music icon status as we know it once it was out in the world.

This is the album that brought fans singles including "Not Dark Yet" and "Love Sick," and not only did it end up going platinum, but it's also considered a critical success, receiving rave reviews from outlets including The Los Angeles Times.

In 2023, Dylan rereleased the album as part of Columbia Records' official bootleg series, titled Fragments: Time Out Of Mind Sessions 1996-1997. Even almost three decades later, the album continues to remain relevant to fans today.

Bob Dylan Wasn't a Big Fan of the Album at First

Knowing Dylan, it's not surprising at all that there are still things he would change about Time Out of Mind, despite its massive success.

In 2001, he told Rolling Stone that he felt "extremely frustrated" when he wasn't able to make more upbeat songs for the album that he was hoping for.

“I got so frustrated in the studio that I didn’t really dimensionalize the songs," he said. "I could’ve if I’d had the willpower. I just didn’t at that time, and so you got to steer it where the event itself wants to go."

He continued, "I feel there was a sameness to the rhythms. It was more like that swampy, voodoo thing that [producer Daniel Lanois] is so good at. I just wish I’d been able to get more of a legitimate rhythm-oriented sense into it.”

Even if the album didn't turn out exactly the way that Dylan wanted it to, it still ended up being one of his most highly regarded — and those three Grammy awards certainly don't hurt, either.
