ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Rochester’s East End has seen significant changes over the past year with several businesses coming and going.

The owners of Eden Coffee moved from Music City to the Flower City and the dream began of opening Eden Coffee. They soon found a home in the historic Hallman Chevrolet building on East Avenue.

“It’s the first part of my day, oftentimes, and I get so excited creating new things every time that I have my daily coffee. It’s so versatile. There’s almost no flavor that you couldn’t put into a cup of coffee. So I like how different you can make the same format,” Karabyn said.

AlBunn Coffee House, which opened in June, started as an idea between four friends. Both spots are serving morning coffee daily.

“Our coffee comes straight from Yemen, from high altitude mountains,” Ali Monassar, co-owner of AlBunn Coffee House, said. “We have a warehouse here locally that we roll our own coffee, and we will be roasting our coffee here.”

Karabyn added, “We will be having majority housemade syrups. And that’s something that I’m very proud of, that we’ve been working really hard on.”

In addition to new coffee spots, there are also new options for lunch and dinner. Lina’s, a restaurant that spent years in Brighton, has made the move to Rochester’s East End.

“Just something that I always had a passion for doing. My husband’s a great cook and just did it all. Here we are,” Yolanda Baker-Bray, owner of Lina’s, said.

Other new spots on the East End include Fools Gold and Habibi Cafe and Hookah Lounge. Anthology, which had closed, recently reopened under new ownership.

The city has implemented a special event zone across East and Alexander, which officials say has made the area safer.

Rochester Police Data Portal shows no shootings in the restricted zone that started in September 2024. From January 2023 until then, there were four, including one homicide.

“The special liquor restriction, it helps a lot,”  Monassa said. “Friday nights it started getting crazy, but Saturday’s under control.”

The Albunn Coffee House worked with the city to ensure their younger crowd could still enjoy the area. “In the beginning, we had the barricades. We were included in there. But then we talked to the mayor and they pushed it back,”  Monassar said.

Lina’s, which closes before the barricades go up, reported feeling safe at all times. “Honestly, we felt safe with the way that they do stuff. But we’ve never had any problems,” said Lina’s owner, Yolanda Baker-Bray.

Baker-Bray added that business remains strong. “It’s been great. I mean, the people over here are so nice. It’s just been crazy busy, which is a good thing,” she said.

Customers in the area have reported no issues with the extra police presence. The safety zones are active on Saturdays from 10 p.m. until 3 a.m.

One business, Axes and Ales, shut down over the summer, blaming the extra police presence for driving customers away due to the perception of crime in the area.
