Clock ticks until government shutdown: Reaction from local officials and health care rally planned

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The U.S. government is on the brink of the first government shutdown in almost seven years, as Democrats and Republicans in Congress haven’t yet reached a spending agreement. The government will shut down after midnight Wednesday if the Senate does not pass a House measure to extend federal funding.

Rochester-area health care workers and community leaders will hold a rally on Tuesday morning, urging Congress to stop the shutdown by funding health care. Senate Democrats say they won’t vote for the funding bill unless it includes an extension of expiring health care benefits. The health care worker union 1199SEIU, Healthcare Education Project, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, Rochester Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative, Vocal NY, are holding the rally.

Local House members are also speaking out. Rep. Joe Morelle is urging his Republican colleagues in the Senate to agree to the demands of Democrats. On X, he wrote, “The American people deserve a government that puts their interests first.”

Rep. Claudia Tenney said Senate Democrats would be to blame if the government shuts down, writing, “it’s their choice, not ours.” Republicans, who hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate, would likely need at least eight votes from Democrats to pass the bill with 60 votes. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky is the only Republican expected to vote against it.

Don’t let Chuck Schumer spin this. We funded the government in the House. The Senate needs 60 votes, & Democrats are the ones blocking it. If there’s a shutdown, it’s THEIR choice; not ours. pic.twitter.com/b8njOYIcvZ
