Can Mikel Arteta make it back-to-back wins in the UEFA Champions League? We look ahead to Wednesday’s clash with our Arsenal vs Olympiakos prediction and preview.
Arsenal vs Olympiakos: The Key Stats
Arsenal claimed all three points against Olympiakos in a massive 72.2% of pre-match simulations by the Opta supercomputer. Arsenal have won their last five games in the league phase of the Champions League, their longest such run in the group stage/league phase in 20 years. Ayoub El Kaabi has scored 21 goals in 24 appearances in major European competition for Olympiakos.Mikel Arteta may have to bring Arsenal back down to earth for their second Champions League fixture against Olympiakos on Wednesday.
The Gunners fought back from a goal down at Newcastle United to win 2-1 on Sunday thanks to Gabriel Magalhães‘ 96th-minute winner. Substitute Mikel Merino had headed home an equaliser just 12 minutes earlier.
A hard-fought victory at St. James’ Park moved Arsenal to within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool, who lost at Crystal Palace a day earlier, but Arteta will want attention to quickly turn back to their European quest.
Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard both scored as substitutes in their opening Champions League game of 2025-26, beating Athletic Club 2-0 in Bilbao.
Including last season, that marked a fifth straight win in the league phase of the Champions League for Arsenal. They have not won six in a row in the first group stage of the competition since a run between December 2004 and November 2005.
Among all sides to have featured in the last two editions, Arsenal have also conceded fewer goals per game than any other team in the competition (0.72 – 18 in 25 games). They also have the lowest expected goals conceded per game average (0.9).
Their sturdy defence has been helped by the impressive David Raya. The Spanish goalkeeper has prevented more goals than any other in the Champions League since the start of last season (5.8 – nine goals conceded from 14.8 xG on target, excluding own goals), based on the xG of shots on target faced.
Raya will be confident of another clean sheet at the Emirates Stadium, given Olympiakos have only scored one goal in their last six matches in the Champions League (D1 L5).
Olympiakos’ poor attacking output is not for a lack of creativity, though, considering the Greek side have attempted 51 shots across those outings, hitting the target 11 times.
Ayoub El Kaabi will be tasked with turning around that profligate record. The striker has scored 21 goals in 24 appearances in major European competition for Olympiakos. However, he failed to score with any of his four attempts in their goalless opening draw with 10-man Pafos, his joint-most attempts without finding the net in a major European outing for the Greek side.
Although going forward is a concern, José Luis Mendilibar’s primary focus will be on Olympiakos’ defensive efforts in keeping Arsenal’s star-studded squad at bay.
The visitors can at least come into the game with some historical confidence, having won their last three trips to the Emirates. Only Manchester City (7) have ever won more consecutive games there as a visiting team.
Martín Zubimendi pulled the strings for Arsenal on MD1, making a match-leading 13 passes that broke the opposition line in his first Champions League game for Arsenal. His 10 made from the defensive half were also the most by any midfielder across all the matches played on the opening matchday.
On the flanks, Bukayo Saka will be expected to start after Noni Madueke‘s promising start to the campaign was halted by a knee injury that could keep him out until the end of November.
Madueke made the joint-most carries into the penalty area (7) in the opening round of European fixtures (level with Rodrygo). Jérémy Doku was also the only winger to progress with the ball further upfield via carries (285 metres vs Napoli) than Madueke’s 210-yard gain.
He will not have chance to impress again on Wednesday, joining Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Piero Hincapié as injured absentees for Arteta’s side. Martin Ødegaard, at least, returned from a shoulder issue to assist Gabriel’s winner at Newcastle.
Arsenal vs Olympiakos Head-to-Head
This will be the 13th time Arsenal and Olympiakos have faced each other in European competition. None of the previous meetings have ended level and both sides have won six games apiece.
Indeed, Arsenal have already faced Olympiakos on four occasions during Arteta’s reign as manager (W2 L2); only facing PSV (6) more often in European competition.
Olympiakos eliminated them from the UEFA Europa League in 2019-20 (last 32), before Arsenal knocked the Greek side out of the same competition the following season in the last 16.
