Justin Rister, who has worked at Stringed Instrument Services right alongside the tracks for 15 years, said, “You know, an unfortunate reality of having the train tracks outside, right close to us is we are privy to some of the things that happen.”
Rister added that local businesses are quick to respond to emergencies, praising the police and fire department for their swift action.
Despite visible signs, blockades, and police presence, many people continue to cross the tracks. News10NBC reached out to Fairport Police and railway owner CSX for comments. While the police did not respond, CSX emphasized the importance of rail safety education with the statement below
“In 2024, approximately 2,250 people across the country were injured or killed in railroad crossing collisions or trespass incidents, many of which could have been prevented. Rail safety education is key to incident prevention and CSX is working with organizations like Operation Lifesaver to reach as many people as possible with information on how to recognize the risks and make safe choices around trains and tracks.”
Douglas Sharp of RV&E Bike Shop pointed to ongoing construction on Main Street as a contributing factor. “I mean, I think the biggest thing right now is just getting Main Street open back up,” Sharp said. “Our accidents and incidents count has gone up dramatically since the road’s been closed.”
According to the Village of Fairport, the construction on Main Street is expected to be completed sometime in October.
