Israel has agreed to a US plan for ending the war in Gaza that calls for a temporary authority to run the territory, Donald Trump has said.
The US President made the announcement at a joint press conference between him and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
If Hamas agree to the plan, there will be an immediate ceasefire, the hostages must be be released within 72 hours, followed by the release of Palestinian prisoners.
If Hamas do not agree, Trump said Netanyahu would have his “full backing to do what you would have to do”.
The US President said this is “potentially one of the greatest days ever in civilisation”.

Earlier, Netanyahu used the White House visit to extend a formal apology to Qatar’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, for a recent military strike targeting Hamas officials in the Gulf emirate.
The attack infuriated Arab leaders and triggered rare criticism by the US.
“As a first step, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his deep regret that Israel’s missile strike against Hamas targets in Qatar unintentionally killed a Qatari serviceman,” the White House said in a statement.
“He further expressed regret that, in targeting Hamas leadership during hostage negotiations, Israel violated Qatari sovereignty and affirmed that Israel will not conduct such an attack again in the future.”
As he welcomed Netanyahu to the White House, Trump responded affirmatively when asked by reporters whether he was confident a deal would be soon reached to end the fighting between Israel and Hamas.
“I am. I’m very confident,” Trump said.
