Taco Bell Teams Up With Cult-Favorite Ice Cream Chain to Reinvent a Discontinued Favorite

Taco Bell and Salt & Straw's long-awaited menu collab is finally here.

The two cult-favorite chains previously teased the partnership over a year ago, at Taco Bell's first-ever Live Más LIVE event, which offered a sneak preview into what the Mexican-inspired fast-food joint was working on. At the time, not much was known about the release other than it looked exactly like the nostalgic and since-discontinued Choco Taco.

Now, not only are we getting a release date, but we're getting all the details on the item and how it came to be–and trust us, you're going to appreciate its backstory.

Taco Bell and Salt & Straw Officially Launch The Tacolate

The origins of this “iconic partnership” date back almost a decade, to 2016, when Salt & Straw launched the first version of the ice cream taco at its soft-serve concept, Wiz Bang Bar. Only six years later, the original treat that inspired the recipe (Klondike's Choco Taco) was tragically discontinued. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Salt & Straw re-launched its version of the treat, Chocolate Tacolates, as a limited run, which we’re told “sold out in minutes.”

The popularity of the artisan chocolate-covered, ice cream-filled waffle taco shell caught the attention of Taco Bell's CEO Sean Tresvant. Tresvant, together with Salt & Straw co-founders Kim and Tyler Malek, eventually got together to churn up the nostalgic treat in a way that's "authentic to both brands."

The Tacolate: crunchy waffle cone filled with cinnamon ancho chili ice cream and dipped in single origin chocolate before getting the final coating of crunchy, toasted brown rice.

Which leads us to today, when the two icons revealed that The Tacolate is officially heading to market–and soon.

The revamped recipe features a taco shell made from hand-pressed, extra-crunchy waffle cones that's then filled with cinnamon ancho chili ice cream and dipped in single-origin chocolate before getting the final coating of crunchy, toasted brown rice. All tacos are served with two custom Taco Bell-inspired sauce packets: Mango Jalapeno Sauce and Wildberry Cinnamon Sauce.

The Tacolate launches will be available beginning on Friday, Oct. 3.

“It has been a dream to collaborate with Taco Bell to bring this product to life,” Tyler shared in a statement. “Nearly a decade in the making, we’ve developed a reimagined version of the nostalgic treat and we could not be more excited to bring our version to ice cream and tacos lovers.”

Those looking to try the nostalgic treat have a few options as The Tacolate will be available in Salt & Straw shops across Oregon, Washington, California, New York, Florida, Nevada, Arizona and New England. It’s also available for shipping nationwide in 6-packs via the Salt & Straw website and select third-party delivery platforms beginning this Friday, October 3 (prices may vary).
