Iconic Alt-Rockers Tease Big News After Devastating Breakup

When the groundbreaking post-punk band Sonic Youth broke up in 2011 — amid the highly contentious divorce of members Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore — fans were beyond devastated (and they've never really gotten over it). So it's no surprise that people are pretty much losing their minds over a recent series of cryptic social media posts that seem to suggest the band is planning something major for 2026.

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the band's ninth studio album, Washing Machine, on Sept. 26, several Instagram accounts linked to Sonic Youth — including their official account and those of Gordon and drummer Steve Shelley — shared the same image of the washing machine from the album's cover printed with "2026" instead of "Sonic Youth."

"This was my favorite recording experience with sonic youth," Gordon wrote in the caption, adding, "We went to memphis ate a lot of barbecue went to al greens church on easter sunday made some hot jams!"

Commenters were quick to speculate about what the mysterious post might mean.

"If Oasis can reunite so can Sonic Youth," wrote one person, with a second agreeing, "Please please please be the beginnings of a reunion. If Liam and Noel can put their differences aside I hope Kim and Thurston can too."

Why Sonic Youth almost changed their name to Washing Machine

Washing Machine almost ended up being more than an album title. When Sonic Youth was working on the record, they were asked by R.E.M. to sign on as the opening act for their massive Monster world tour. The band said they would do it if they could tour under a new name: Washing Machine.

"For a while we were thinking of changing the band's name to Washing Machine," Moore told Puncture Magazine at the time, per Diffuser. "Because Sonic Youth has become a brand name. I mean, I like the fact that we're nearing 40 and we're called Sonic Youth. It's the best thing about our name. But it's gotten so it carries so much baggage. In the end we thought our management wouldn't be too happy with the change."Gordon offered a similarly practical explanation for why they didn't change their name in a separate interview.

“We’ve got a baby, and you gotta pay the rent,” she told Rolling Stone," per The Quietus. “So we’re compromising and calling the new record Washing Machine.”

Whether or not a reunion is in the cards (or, more likely, a reissue) remains to be seen...but fans would definitely show up to see Sonic Youth play, no matter what they call themselves.
