Going into the Bye With Good Vibes, Contributions From Everyone, How Can I Find My Maxx Crosby? And Other Bears Bullets

Closing September feeling hopeful about the Bears going into the bye while the Cubs are hosting playoff games feels so darn good.

Starting the week with good vibes knowing that there isn’t another game to immediately dive into is going to do wonders for the collective spirit of Bears fans. Winning on the road is hard. And while it was UGLY for most of that game, that the Bears were able to pull out a win is a testament to changes that are happening at Halas Hall. Plus, it sure as heck beats the alternative of going into the bye after a loss. Being 2-2 > 1-3. It’s simple math, my friends.

And don’t get it twisted. This team has problems it needs to solve and kinks that must be ironed out. But this is a perk of an early bye week. Instead of waiting it out, this team can take a progressive mindset en route to making changes that will take place coming out of the bye. One thing I’d like for this team to get done during the bye is to figure out a way to establish its identity earlier in games. That game-winning touchdown drive was an identity-establishing drive. If that happens earlier in the game, then this group isn’t talking about needing a game-clinching blocked field goal to seal the deal late. Mandatory Credit: Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images My favorite part of the win was watching players from every phase contribute to the second-half comeback. The offense saw a rejuvenated running game, a shakeup at offensive tackle, and quarterback Caleb Williams put forth a gutsy performance. Watching Williams down the stretch was like watching an ace pitcher labor through without his best stuff and still come out on top. I’m used to watching other teams have quarterbacks who do that, so it was refreshing to be on the other side. Defensively, there were timely turnovers and big plays. That game shouldn’t have been this close when your defense comes away with four turnovers. Don’t get me wrong. The loss to Detroit is still fresh in my memory. But the turnaround since that game has been notable. Fist bumps all around for Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen and his staff of assistants. This team even received contributions from the special teams unit. I love that Patrick called the Josh Blackwell field goal block a core memory kind of play because that is one that will live on for ages, like the Bryan Robinson blocked field goal to win the first game after Walter Payton’s death. Kicker Cairo Santos went 4-for-4 with two 50+ yard field goals. Devin Duvernay had an important punt return that shifted field position. And Tory Taylor dropped this dime of a punt:

I’m not a big letter grade person, so I’m not sure what I’d give rookie Ozzy Trapilo on that front. However, I thought he was OK in his debut at right tackle. He is nowhere close to being a finished product, but I thought he did well in holding down the fort after Theo Benedet slid to the left side. In any case, I think we saw how important Darnell Wright is to the offensive line. Ultimately, thinking about the offensive line has me looking forward to Matt’s offensive line grades and reviews later this week. Maxx Crosby is fun to watch when he isn’t playing your favorite team. The Pro Bowl edge defender came up with 5 solo tackles, 3 tackles-for-loss, 3 passes defended, 1 quarterback hit, and countless moments that had me yelling “SOMEBODY BLOCK THAT GUY!” at my television. How can the Bears find someone like him? Football is better when you get to share Bears locker room videos (via Twitter/X):

    — Chicago Bears (@ChicagoBears) September 29, 2025 The next time the Chicago Bears play football, they’ll be going for three-in-a-row on Monday Night Football in our nation’s capital. Chills. Literal chills. I thought the CBS broadcast tandem of Spero Dedes and Adam Archuleta was underwhelming. Archuleta was frustrating to listen to because he did not seem to have a pulse for the teams and coaches, and it showed up on one of the game’s biggest plays in the first quarter:

On Sunday Night Football, the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys played to a tie. And I had a good laugh about it:

    — Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) September 29, 2025 The Bears beat the Cowboys. The Cowboys tied the Packers. By virtue of the transitive property, the Bears are better than the Packers. It is almost a shame that the game ended in a tie because those teams put on one of the most enjoyable Hate-Watch experiences I’ve had in a while. I said almost, so don’t give me a dirty look. The way that I see it: Neither team getting a win feels like a win for me. But with that being said, the Cowboys and Packers combined for 80 points and 925 net yards in 70 minutes of game action. As a neutral, that is fun. More games should be like that moving forward. But to do all of that and not get a win is objectively hilarious.

    — NFL (@NFL) September 29, 2025 I’m excited about the Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime show. And while it is wayyyy too early to think about a Super Bowl game day meal spread, I might have to break out some of grandma’s favorites (pastelillos, platano maduro, arroz con abichuelas, bistec encebollado) for the big game. With that being said, I’ll order in if the Bears are playing in the big game because I don’t know if I can cook and properly prepare for that game. I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
