Ferris Bueller Star Ben Stein, 80, Shares Behind-the-Scenes Scoop on Iconic Scene

One of the stars of the iconic 1986 movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off just shared some fun tidbits about one of the film's most legendary scenes. Ben Stein, 80, played an economics teacher in the film that also starred Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jennifer Grey, and many others.

Stein talked to Entertainment Tonightand shared that he wasn't even slated to have a role in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He was on the set one day, visiting a friend of his who was a producer of the movie, chatting with producer John Hughes.

While they were talking, Hughes noted that Stein had a "very, very funny voice," and asked Stein if he would do a little role off-camera. The idea was that Stein would take attendance for the economics class, off-camera.

Hughes told Stein he could only pay him $360, and Stein quipped that he'd pay Hughes instead. Stein was then told to go on the stage and make something up off the top of his head.

Stein explained that he started making up an economics lecture about tariffs and had everybody on the cast and crew cracking up. Hughes wanted him to do it again and make it longer, and once again, everybody on the set loved it.

He recalled an impressed Broderick even asking if he'd ever done Broadway, and Stein revealed he had never acted previously. Because everybody laughed so hard at Stein's ad-libbing as an economics teacher, Hughes decided he wanted to capture it on camera.

What they filmed that day became the iconic classroom scene where he deadpans, "Bueller? Bueller? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?" while taking attendance.

Later that day, Stein recalled, he went home and told his wife he'd just had the best day of his life. She questioned that, thinking that he should consider their wedding day the best day of his life. He replied, "No, better than that" to her.

That unplanned on-camera scene was the catalyst for Stein to act regularly for many years.

Stein "never dreamed" that the line he made up for the movie would become as iconic as it has. He also talked to Entertainment Tonight about the line in 1991 and admitted, "I still don't quite get why it's funny."

He acknowledged it was a memorable line and shared that for a long time, anywhere he went, people would echo the line back to him.

Even now, Stein shared, he does not understand why everybody thinks the line is so funny.
