British tourists struggling to find affordable accommodation in Ibiza can now stay in a car with a bed in the back listed on Airbnb for just over £100 a night.
An advertisement placed on the letting platform by a host named Richard offers visitors the chance to sleep in a “diesel manual car with a bed inside and no rear windows, which means you can blend in unnoticed”.
The advert, which breaches island regulations banning tourists from staying in cars or caravans outside official campsites, continues: “I recommend parking in the forest away from the city; the north of the island is the best place to sleep peacefully at night.
“During the day, pack up your bed and drive safely around the island – you’ve got a minivan to enjoy!”
The listing for two people titled “Home Gurú”, first reported on by eldiario.es, underlines the problems the Balearic Island and other Spanish tourism hotspots are facing with overtourism exacerbating a lack of affordable housing.

Marí told reporters at a press conference that Ibiza was “the first territory in Spain where illegal Airbnb offers have disappeared”.
Marga Prohens, the Balearic Islands regional leader, congratulated Ibiza and Airbnb for its “responsible” fight against illegal tourist accommodation. “Today, we are pioneers throughout Spain,” she told a press conference last week.
Since July 2024, authorities in Ibiza have eradicated 2,831 illegal advertisements representing 14,532 tourist beds.
The island authority website states that wild camping is not authorised “so tourist accommodation in campers, caravans, tents or cabins outside of authorised campsites on the island is not permitted”.

This newspaper also tried to contact the host but did not receive an answer.
Enrique Gómez Bastida, director of the department that combats illegal housing in Ibiza, said the rise of tourist villas and extra rooms rented out in houses has stretched Ibiza’s limited resources.
“Housing access is a real and serious problem,” he told The i Paper in an interview published in June.

Ibiza has a population of about 160,000 but 3.6 million tourists last year visited the island and its smaller neighbour Formentera.
The island’s council also wants to fight pirate taxis and impose a limit of 16,000 rental cars to reduce congestion on the roads.
