Mariah Carey is ready for her grunge era — and just shared two rarely heard songs from the secret album she released in 1995.
The iconic singer, 56, sat down for an in-depth conversation with SZA last week as part of Apple Music's new live show Flowers. Of course, SZA had to bring up Carey's secret grunge album, Someone's Ugly Daughter.
Back in the '90s, Carey worked on the project while simultaneously recording her hit album, Daydream. Looking back on the period of time, Carey told SZA that it "allowed me to feel free when I wasn't free yet in my life."
SZA even convinced Carey to play two tracks from the release, "Hermit" and "Love Is A Scam," and showed off the album cover that Carey said she created herself.

But as Carey revealed in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, her record label wasn't interested in promoting her grunge side. Instead, they compromised by allowing Dane to sing lead vocals while Carey sang backup.
While there is a version of the album that has Carey's voice at the forefront, it's never been released. After making the revelation about the album in 2020, Carey confirmed that she still has a copy — and wouldn't be opposed to releasing it.
As recently as earlier this year Carey has discussed her plans to share it with the world...but as of now, it's still in the works.
"I mean, I really want to [release it], but I want to do videos, and I have just so many ideas for that," she told Associated Press.
