Rory McIlroy and Matt Fitzpatrick make cheeky Bryson DeChambeau gesture amid Ryder Cup celebrations

Matt Fitzpatrick may have tied his singles match against Bryson DeChambeau, but the Brit managed one final victory over his rival.

Following their dramatic triumph on Sunday afternoon at Bethpage Black, the European team took a moment to celebrate above their adoring fans on a bridge, which was wrapped in red and had the name of every American Ryder Cup star emblazoned on it.

But one name in particular, DeChambeau’s, caught the attention of Fitzpatrick and Rory McIlroy.

A fan captured the moment McIlroy leaned over the railing to suss out which name was directly below him.

Upon seeing it was DeChambeau’s, McIlroy whipped up the crowd as he pointed to the American’s name and immediately shook his head.

But Fitzpatrick wasn’t done with the mocking.

The one-time major winner decided he would take things a step further and signalled to McIlroy for a European flag to be draped over the side, which would cover DeChambeau’s name.

McIlroy was all too happy to oblige, as the act was greeted with some cheers but also a few boos, something which the Northern Irishman became accustomed to throughout the tournament.

Not that the Northern Irishman cared, given he burst out laughing upon placing the flag over DeChambeau.

Yet any cheers or boos were soon drowned out as fans and Europe’s players erupted into a chant of ‘ole, ole, ole’.

How did Fitzpatrick fare against DeChambeau in singles?

Although McIlroy did not directly compete against DeChambeau at this year’s Ryder Cup, Fitzpatrick did.

The Brit was pitted against his big-hitting rival on Sunday in a singles tie.

It looked like Fitzpatrick was on course for a comfortable win as he was up by five shots after seven holes.

But DeChambeau roared back and beat his rival on four holes to set up a grandstand finale with only the 17th and 18th remaining.

Fitzpatrick’s five-shot lead evaporated on the penultimate hole as DeChambeau levelled the score.

Yet neither man could find the extra gear needed to win on the 18th, meaning their match finished a tie.

What impact did Fitzpatrick and DeChambeau’s tie have on the overall result?

To finish with a draw marked a monumental effort for DeChambeau on what was a stellar final day for the Americans given they went into Sunday on the wrong side of a 11.5-4.5 deficit.

In fact, the US scooped up nine points from a possible 12 in the singles, with Ludvig Aberg the only European member to win his tie.

But America’s herculean comeback bid fell short as Shane Lowry‘s putt ensured Europe retained the Ryder Cup, before Tyrrell Hatton made sure the visitors won it outright via a score of 15-13.

For Fitzpatrick, his tie with DeChambeau meant he finished the Ryder Cup with his best-ever points haul of 2.5.

The 2022 U.S. Open winner failed to register a single point in his first two Ryder Cups in 2016 and 2021, which Europe lost.

Fitzpatrick registered his first win in 2023 during the fourballs alongside McIlroy, but his efforts last weekend at Bethpage Black proved to be his most important yet.
