Although McIlroy did not directly compete against DeChambeau at this year’s Ryder Cup, Fitzpatrick did.

It looked like Fitzpatrick was on course for a comfortable win as he was up by five shots after seven holes.

But DeChambeau roared back and beat his rival on four holes to set up a grandstand finale with only the 17th and 18th remaining.

Fitzpatrick’s five-shot lead evaporated on the penultimate hole as DeChambeau levelled the score.

Yet neither man could find the extra gear needed to win on the 18th, meaning their match finished a tie.

To finish with a draw marked a monumental effort for DeChambeau on what was a stellar final day for the Americans given they went into Sunday on the wrong side of a 11.5-4.5 deficit.
