Viktor Hovland’s injured neck played a starring role as Europe held off a stunning American fightback at the Ryder Cup.
The Europeans were made to sweat by Team USA, who needed to pull off the biggest comeback in the event’s history and nearly did.
Keegan Bradley’s men won the singles session 8-and-a-half, 4-and-a-half as the visitors, who did all the hard work on Friday and Saturday, crept over the line.
In the end, it was Shane Lowry who ensured Europe did not suffer one of the all-time sporting shocks.
Hours earlier, though, Hovland edged his side closer to victory by being unable to feature.
That evoked the ‘envelope rule’ – meaning his match with Harris English was cancelled and automatically ruled a tie.

“He came to the party with a complete sense of calmness and never faltered, taking down the formidable Patrick Cantlay.
