The Chicago Bears are straight up not having a good time right now out in Las Vegas.
Sure, the good news is that the defense showed up early and snagged three takeaways. But the bad news is that the Bears were able to score only six points from those turnovers. And just when you thought this team was clawing its way back into the game, it gives up a 36-yard kick return and a 64-yard touchdown run to Ashton Jeanty to see what was a 1-point deficit balloon to a 14-6 Raiders lead. A Cairo Santos field goal later in the second quarter cut the deficit to 14-9 before halftime, but it didn’t make me feel much better about the direction of this game.
You could not have scripted a worse start for the Bears. There were failures in all three facets of the game. A drop by running back D’Andre Swift on the first possession ended Chicago’s first possession. Later, a drop by tight end Cole Kmet that would’ve put the Bears in the red zone marked the beginning of the end of a drive that yielded no points and ended with a Tory Taylor punt that went for a touchback. We have seen missed blocking assignments by players forgetting to block Maxx Crosby (which is inexcusable). Coverage mishaps have let the Raiders’ pass catchers make plays in space. It’s been awful at every turn.
Quarterback Caleb Williams is 12-for-22 for 98 yards, an interception, and an unsightly 47.2 passer rating. Williams has been sacked just once, but he has been hurried on more drop-backs than I care to remember. Theo Benedet started the game, but Ozzy Trapilo entered the lineup late in the second quarter. It’s ugly out there right now for an offense that has just 90 total yards at halftime. And while things can turn around in the second half, this first half is a cold reminder of how far the Bears are from being the type of team they want to be in 2025.
