Willie Nelson, 92, is known as one of country music’s greatest and most prolific artists. But according to Nelson’s son Lukas, 36, the country crooner is also one of the funniest.
On a recent appearance on Bert Kreischer’sBertcast podcast, Lukas stopped by to talk about his new release American Romance and shared what it was like to grow up with his famous father – including Willie’s penchant for teaching his son dirty jokes.
“I think comedy right now is what’s saving the planet. The ability to laugh brings people together. And we need to be able to talk and laugh about things. Everything under the sun, there should be nothing sacred. But I just really believe that,” Lukas shared with Kreischer.
“I grew up telling the dirtiest… my dad told me the dirtiest jokes ever. He taught me a limerick when I was 6… I learned that when I was six years old, man. So my dad is a funny guy too, by the way. I’ve heard all his jokes now, but sometimes we tell each other jokes.
“But comedy is it, it’s everything. Laughing is one of the great reasons why life is worth living, is so we can laugh.”
The 12-time Grammy Award-winning country legend is known for his sense of humor both onstage and off.
Lukas recently joined his dad onstage for Farm Aid 2025, where the two played an epic rendition of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe,” a song the duo covered a few years back.
Lukas calls the performance a highlight of his career, stating, “Man, the best thing in life is being with him onstage playing. We play a lot together. We did, I’m so glad we did this, we did a Pearl Jam song together called ‘Just Breathe,’ and did a video for it back years ago. And I love that we’ll have that for the rest of our lives together. I’ll always have that with him. I love that I’ll have him, and his voice, with me forever.”
Making Music to Connect With Dad
Lukas shared with Kreischer that he first got into music as a way to connect with his dad, who was often leaving to go on the road. As early as 13 years old, Lukas had joined Willie Nelson’s band.
“He is a legend. Man, that guy is out on the road right now. That’s the thing, too—now the only hard part is that our schedules bring us apart. Because back when I was a kid, I would play with him. I played in his band, I started playing in his band when I was really young, like 13.
“And I loved it, because that’s what brought me closer to him. Because I’d be sad, he’d be gone all the time, and I’d be missing him. But then, that’s kind of why I started playing music, was just to get closer to him.”
