‘Malpractice’ – Furious WNBA coach demands resignations with officials blamed as star player left injured

It was a day to forget for the Minnesota Lynx on Friday.

Head coach Cheryl Reeve stormed onto the court after star forward Napheesa Collier was injured in a loss that leaves the Lynx on the brink of elimination.

In downtown Phoenix, the Mercury defeated the Lynx 84-76 to take a 2-1 lead in a best-of-five semifinal series and leave the number one seed Lynx one game away from the WNBA Finals.

The game was marred by controversy after Reeve was ejected for running onto the floor to dispute a call.

She was furious about was no foul being given after Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas stole the ball from Collier, while seemingly making contact with her ankle in the process.

After the game, Reeve didn’t hold back as she went on a stunning rant that called out WNBA officials but also executives.

“This is the look that our league wants, for some reason,” Reeve said of the game’s physicality.

“We were trying to play through it, we tried not to make excuses.

“One of the best players in the league [Collier] shot zero free throws. Zero, and she had five fouls. Zero free throws.

“Got her shoulder pulled out and finished the game with her leg being taken out, and probably has a fracture.

“And so this is what our league wants. OK. But I want to call for a change in leadership at the league level when it comes to officiating. It’s bad for the game.“

Reeve didn’t stop there; the 59-year-old then singled out the officials for the game and used profanities to get her point across.

“The officiating crew that we had for tonight, for the leadership to deem those three people semifinals playoff worthy is f****** malpractice,” she added.

“I can take an L with the best of them. I don’t think we should have to play through more than what they did.

“We’ve got players – (Maria Kliundikova is) on the glass and gets f****** cracked, and there’s no call. And all of them decided, ’It wasn’t my call, I don’t know, I didn’t see it that way.’ They’re (bleeping) awful.“

The Lynx shot just 11 free throws in the game, while Phoenix shot 22 from the line.

Collier put up 17 points and grabbed six rebounds before her injury, which saw her leave the court in tears and limping with 21.8 seconds left on the clock.

“Take out one of the best players in the league because you have no control of the game!” Lynx assistant coach Rebekkah Brunson wrote on X.

Not the first time Reeve has blasted officials

Those who are familiar with the Minnesota Lynx will know that Reeve is no stranger to aiming at officials.

When the Lynx lost Game 5 and subsequently the WNBA Finals to the New York Liberty last year, Reeve claimed that the title was “stolen” by the refs.

“We know we could have done some things, right, but you shouldn’t have to overcome to that extent,’ Reeve said at the time. “This s*** ain’t that hard. Officiating is not that hard.”

“Bring it on,’ she said, ‘because that s*** was stolen from us.”
