Graham Potter sacked by West Ham and Nuno Espirito Santo is leading candidate to save their season

Graham Potter has been sacked by West Ham just 72 hours before their clash away to Everton in the Premier League.

A 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace proved to be his final game in charge.

The Englishman departs after just nine months at the London Stadium, having found himself under mounting pressure this season, with the Hammers second from bottom of the Premier League.

And defeat to Palace last weekend has proven to be the final straw for Potter, with the clash being billed as make or break for his future beforehand.

talkSPORT reported recently that the Irons were actively sounding out replacements for the 50-year-old.

Nuno Espirito Santo is now a leading candidate to replace Potter.

West Ham have also held talks with former player and manager Slaven Bilic about a return to London Stadium.

Owner David Sullivan made the decision to axe Potter while holidaying in Spain after a nightmare start to the season.

After a fourth defeat in five league games this season, the Hammers’ board have now decided enough is enough.

A statement from West Ham read: “West Ham United can confirm that Head Coach Graham Potter has left the Club.

“Results and performances over the course of the second half of last season and the start of the 2025/26 season have not matched expectations, and the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary in order to help improve the team’s position in the Premier League as soon as possible.

“The Club can confirm that Assistant Coach Bruno Saltor, First Team Coaches Billy Reid and Narcis Pelach, Lead Goalkeeper Coach Casper Ankergren, and Goalkeeper Coach Linus Kandolin have also left with immediate effect.

“The Board would like to thank Graham and his coaching staff for their hard work during their time with the Hammers and wish them every success for the future.

“The process of appointing a replacement is underway. The Club will be making no further comment at this time.”

Potter departs east London having won just six of his 25 games in charge, causing the atmosphere at the club to turn sour.

Prior to the Crystal Palace clash, sections of the West Ham fan base took part in a succession of peaceful protests following a recent vote of no confidence.

The idea behind this was to force majority owner Sullivan into making changes at top of the club.

And Potter has now become the first domino to fall, with the Hammers searching for a second manager in the space of ten months.

The ex-Brighton and Chelsea boss was appointed as Julen Lopetegui’s replacement in January, who had a failed five-month stint in charge.

But Potter has failed to impose his style on the team that has suffered a string of damaging defeats.

On top of defeat to Palace, in the Premier League this season his side have been beaten 3-0 by both Sunderland and Tottenham, as well as a 5-1 home thrashing to Chelsea in August.

On top of this, they were dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Wolves, with their only league win coming in a 3-0 victory at Nottingham Forest.

It is now up to West Ham to decide who will succeed Potter, with the club already appearing to have drawn up a shortlist.

As well as Nuno, talkSPORT reported that former boss Bilic is also a contender to return.

Ex-Hammers midfielder Gary O’Neil, now a client of agent Will Salthouse, who has a close relationship with David Sullivan, was also said to be keen.
