Greeley West football takes up residence in the end zone in dominant win over rival

The last time senior quarterback Isiah Montoya and his Greeley West football team faced a crosstown rival — a mere two weeks ago — they patiently waited for their chance to strike, scoring the game’s only points in the final minutes.

When they faced an even longer-tenured rival Friday, they showed why patience can sometimes be overrated.

This time around, the Spartans didn’t wait for the waning moments to get on the board.

In fact, they scored on their first drive of the game — and on six other drives after that — en route to an emphatic 49-16 win against longtime foe Greeley Central at District 6 Stadium.

“There is so much emotion going through my heart right now, to be able to take the city back,” said Montoya, who connected on three touchdowns, while expertly leading his offense down the field time and time again. “The game plan was to just dominate. We knew we could run the ball. We knew we could pass the ball. We knew on defense, we could stop them. And we went out there and executed everything.”

Greeley West ultimately scored on seven of nine offensive drives before activating the mercy rule-mandated running clock and letting its varsity squad take the rest of the night off midway through the third quarter.

The Spartans improved to 3-2 overall. The last time they had a winning record this late in the season was 2019 when they also started 3-2.

The win Friday couldn’t have contrasted more with West’s 7-0 win against its other rival, Northridge, on Sept. 12. In that game, sophomore Jax Lamb zipped into the end zone with 3 minutes, 46 seconds left to break the nearly game-long scoreless deadlock.

Winning by seven or winning by 33, it doesn’t matter.

When it comes to their rivalries with Northridge and Greeley Central, the Spartans can call themselves the kings of the city for the first time since 2015.

“This fueled our offseason,” Greeley West second-year coach Jakob Vargas said. “Every day we were in the weight room, we talked about, ‘Man, let’s beat Northridge. Let’s beat Central. Let’s win the city back.’ And the kids rallied behind it.”

While Lamb methodically trickled in bursts forward — like a light springtime drizzle — when the Spartans edged the Grizzlies two weeks ago, on Friday the electric sophomore’s performance more closely resembled a midsummer downpour.

He broke a brief stalemate with a 12-yard scamper past the goal line with 10:17 left in the second quarter before scoring three more touchdowns — two on the ground and one through the air.

His 75-yard all-out sprint into the end zone on the first play of the second half put West up 36-8 and slammed the door on any glimmer of hope Greeley Central had of getting back into the game.

Feasting on all the running room created by an overpowering Spartans offensive line, Lamb accumulated 200 yard from scrimmage and received the Red Edgerton Memorial Award, handed to the annual rivalry’s most valuable player.

“I have to give a shoutout to all my O-linemen, all of them,” Lamb said. “They did amazing. They blocked perfectly for me to get my four touchdowns. … Having four touchdowns against a rival is amazing. I’ll remember it forever.”

The last time the Spartans started a season 3-2, they struggled down the stretch, finishing 3-7.

This time, Montoya and his Greeley West teammates hope the sensation of beating both their crosstown rivals and having a winning record midway through the season isn’t the only thing they ultimately celebrate this fall.

“We’ve earned this,” Montoya said. “We were in the weight room since January, at 6 a.m., working hard, for nine months. It took hard work and dedication to get here. But, we’re here now and we’re ready to make a playoff run.”
