Open Water Swimming Venue Selection Underway For 2029 World University Games In North Carolina

Hill Carrow, Chairman & CEO of the 2029 World University Games in North Carolina, announced on LinkedIn that the location for open water swimming has been selected and will be reviewed with the International University Sports Federation (FISU) later this month.

Last week, Carrow spent a day touring and reviewing several potential open water venues. He wrote, “It was a productive day that included sites in and around Greensboro and High Point, NC, including a brief stopover at the Greensboro Aquatic Center and a good conversation with the GAC Director, David Hoover. We have selected what we believe to be the best Open Water site for the Games, which we will share with FISU’s Summer Games staff when they arrive for a Site Visit at the end of the month.”

The exact site they have chosen has not yet been released to the public, but likely will be once it receives FISU’s approval.

Stephen “Sid” Cassidy, the Chairman of the Open Water Committee for World Aquatics, was involved in the venue selection process. Cassidy swam at North Carolina State University and is a part of the North Carolina Swimming Hall of Fame.

“It is so great having Sid’s invaluable expertise assisting us in ensuring the venues and competition for the 2029 World University Games are world class!” Carrow said.

North Carolina was awarded hosting rights for the Games in January 2023, with their bid centered around the Research Triangle region, which includes the cities of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Organizers estimated between $150 million and $350 million in revenue for the state. The bid proposed the aquatic sports—excluding open water—to be held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, about an hour from the Triangle. That facility has seating for nearly 2,000 spectators off-deck and features four pools. That facility has seating for almost 2,000 spectators off-deck and has four pools.

The World University Games are, depending on the year, one of the three largest sporting events in the world by participants. The 12,885 participants in South Korea in 2015 is more than the Olympic Games or Asian Games have ever drawn. The multi-sport event for university students has included three aquatics disciplines at recent events – pool swimming, water polo, and diving.

The 2025 World University Games wrapped up from the Rhine-Ruhr Region in Germany in July, while Chungcheong Megacity, South Korea is set to host the Games in 2027. The last edition of the Summer World University Games hosted in the US was in Buffalo in 1993.

The 2029 Games will be the end of a run of major hosting duties for the United States, which includes the 2026 FIFA World Cup in men’s soccer and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
